Free Music Review: "Songs of the Season" -- Travis' Seasonal Best
Hit: 4 Stars

Prime Cuts: Nothin's Gonna Bring Me Down (At Christmas), Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Go Tell It on the Mountains

18 years have passed since Travis first made his seasonal nod with his debut Christmas CD. Music certainly has evolved over the pass two decades, though Travis is still a venerable icon in country music, he has also left an indelible imprint on contemporary Christian music with his last few releases. "Songs of the Season" is the perfect follow-up as it segues comfortably between both country and Christian genres. Conterminous with the presence of rustic instrumentation such as fiddles, pedal steel, and dobro is the lush and silky display of strings giving the project a dreamy Christmas-feel without sacrificing Travis' country sensibilities. Despite the bygone of nearly 2 decades in between this former CMA Male Vocalists' Yuletide recordings, Travis's southern drawl with his lazy trademark enunciations are still as potent as ever. Material wise, the old and faithful canon of the festive season is well-represented from the religious to those romantic wistful reflections of the wintery season. However, for good measure, Travis has also thrown in three new compositions that are always a treat on any Christmas CD.

Among the three new tracks, the lilting "Nothin's Gonna Bring Me Down (At Christmas)" finds Travis in his frolicsome best. Calling to mind "How Do I Wrap My Heart For Christmas" from Travis' debut Christmas disc, this Pat Alger (writer of Garth Brooks' "Unanswered Prayers") composition has that playful yet cozy zest, this time with Travis reveling so high in the spirit of romance that nothing will taint that euphoria. On a religious side is "Labor of Love," a languid country shuffle that tries to tell the story of the Savior's birth with perhaps too much verbosity for the song's melody to contain. The third and final original comes from the pen of Travis himself" "Our King." Again, a slow strings-encased ballad, "Our King" mines the same lyrical territory as "Labor of Love" without bringing any freshness to the transcendent message of Christ's birth.

Of the traditional offerings, Travis' reverent and contemplative reading of "O Holy Night" adds a fresh poignancy to this hymn of honor to the Christ-child. Never bombastic or contrived, Travis really made each syllable diffuse its meaning in a worshipful way. Reinvigorating the all so familiar "Go Tell It On the Mountains" with some variations to the song's phrasing, Travis morphs it into a new Gospel-like spiritual. Pat Bergeson's harmonica introduction transports "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow" into the big band turf reminiscent of the best of Sinatra and Clooney. On the other hand, Travis' equally at home on the fiddled and pedal steel laden "(There's No Place) Like Home for the Holidays." With the song's call to luxuriate in joys of homecoming, the country touch of "Home for the Holidays" is so fitting thanks to producer Kyle Lehning.

Though this effort is a tad shy of perfect, its variegated themes, styles and backings never allow for a sonorous moment. Relative to his first Yuletide nodding CD, this time Travis sings with more forethought and wisdom--a fringe benefit of the sprouting grey hair on Travis' head. In the end, "Songs of the Season" shows a matured singer at his best.
