Free Music Review: A disappointing follow-up to 2006's "You're Only Lonely"
Hit: 2 Stars

Malo has the voice of an angel and I own almost everything that he's ever put out as a solo artist and of course with The Mavericks. Last year's "You're Only Lonely" was full of faithful covers of some of his favorite songs. Some thought that the covers were a little too faithful and that the songs lacked Malo's intensity and I can undertstand how they might feel that way. I enjoyed it as it was a nice change of pace and showed that he does not need to go to extremes to hit home.

Such is not the case with this release as the songs are not memorable enough to withstand another treatment in which Malo curtails his intensity to bring an authenticity to the material. I was bored and in a way this release reminded me of much of Aaron Neville's solo efforts as he too has a great voice, but has always chosen really tepid material.

I want a feisty Raul Malo back, but even if you like laid back one, this would not be the one that I'd purchase as it only gets a generous 2-star review from me. I am certain that he'll be back with more fun stuff as his talent as too potent to stay down for too long.

Free Music Review: Not quite what I expected
Hit: 2 Stars

First, let me say I DO NOT own the CD. My thoughts come from listening to the samples of the songs on the CD. When I first saw the song selections I was really excited. I remember seeing Raul singing on the '100 Greatest Love Songs' show where, behind an orchestra he belted out 'Make the World Go Away' and 'For the Good Times'. And I thought that if he ever did an album of those songs, I would be the first to buy one. So when I saw the After Hours Cd, I was ready to go for it. Then I listened to the samples and was really dissipointed. Perhaps I was hoping for the countrypolitan sound with lush strings in the background. Songs such as Welcome to my World, A Fool Such As I, Take These Chains, and For the Good Times were rendered to not much more than something you might hear in a lounge somewhere. And maybe that's the way Raul wanted to interpret them. I guess for now, I will wait for his next CD and hope the content and styleings will have changed. Still, Raul Malo has one of the distinctive voices out there. And yes, he could sing the phone book and pull it off.

Free Music Review: 10 Steps Back
Hit: 1 Stars

I have purchased every CD,VHS and DVD of Raul and The Mavericks Plus Los Super Seven.Raul puts on a tremendous live performance.Having has seen him 6 times. But he has taken 10 steps back in this recent cd.Most of the songs have no feel or soul.If his new band members really cared about Raul, they would have voiced their opinion and STOPPED this CD from ever being made.Have to say this the first time I had ever thrown away a CD.Raul's version of most of the songs on this cd make me feel like I am having 32 teeth drilled at the same time without novacaine.Raul,PLEASE call Robert,Paul,Eddie and Jerry Dale, make up and then make a New Mavericks CD.Please don't become Estaban or a Washed up Pat Boone trying to make music/covers that just don't suit you.As a fan of yours for 16 years,PLEASE make a change and let me be a fan for year 17.Thanks!!!

Free Music Review: Extremely disappointing...
Hit: 1 Stars

I've been a big Raul Malo/Mavericks fan for many years and I've got to say this one is a major letdown after his last solo effort. There are a few good moments with "Cold, Cold Heart", "It Only Hurts Me When I Cry", and "Husbands and Wives". But others like "Take These Chains from My Heart" and "Crying Time" lack that soul and feeling Raul puts into his work. "Pocket of a Clown" is an embarrassment and I'm not quite sure what he was thinking on that one.

I would have given this at least two stars, but subtracted one due to the album is just over thity-seven minutes in length. Unforgivable!

Free Music Review: What was Raul thinking?
Hit: 1 Stars

I love Raul malo - have most of his albums - and those of the MNavericks. But he has fallen off the wagon on this album. What was he thinking? The "over 80" market will just love this one - but not me. I've heard all these songs before - better performed and arranged... I gave it away to my 84 year old StepFather after only one listening - he loves it.
