Free Music Review: In a Dry River Bed

This is my 3rd disc by Ray Bonneville. "Gust of Wind" went to #1 in my personal top ten and stuck @ the top like a flag back in 2004. Great song & disc! "Roll It Down" was also an excellent disc. On "Goin' by Feel" Bonneville seems like a troubadour who's been listening to Tony Joe White & Bob Dylan. "I got soul & I got heart; all alone I'm coming out of the dark," Ray sings in his New Orleans homage. "So Long Blues" is a classic Bonneville track with its easy catchy groove, "Tell flowers growing in a dry river bed, how long before the rain comes down again, they don't have no cares for their time end, they got one another in the middle of the night." "Reckless Feeling" percolates delightfully with Bonneville's world-worn vocals about a singer in a club, "Must be the queen of fools for all the tears I cried for you." Several of the tracks are excellent story songs like "Sabine River" & "Run Jolee Run." All of the tracks on the disc are strong. This is another excellent set from Ray Bonneville! Enjoy!

Ray Bonneville's unique musical artistry is a blend of funky visceral grooves framing rich story-songs, anchored by his smoldering blues-drenched guitar and harmonica talents. Acclaimed in Canada (he's won a Juno Award, the Canadian Grammy) his dual-citizenship has enabled him to count too many places as home over the years, having lived in Montreal, Boston, Alaska, New Orleans, Colorado, Seattle, Austin and, most recently rural Arkansas. It's undoubtedly informed Bonneville's unique musical cocktail -a smooth melding of swamp, blues, country and folk.The infectiously groove-laden Goin' By Feel finds Ray stretching into new territory with gritty production and raw instrumentation in a sonic masterwork featuring the finest writing of his career. Co-produced by Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams), Rob Heaney (Cirque du Soleil) and Ray, the new album features 12 self-penned tracks, including crowd pleasing favorites "What Katy Did," "Goin' By Feel," and "Cemetery Row."
Although the traveling musician has spent time in many places, it's New Orleans that Bonneville cites as most influential to his musical style. It's the inspiration for stand-out song "I Am The Big Easy," Ray's powerful tribute to the resilience of the people of that city. It's an emotional salute to the place he called home for half a decade and guest vocalist Eliza Gilkyson's honey-toned backing sweetens the Bonneville groove.
Gilkyson also backs on the notable "Carry The Fallen," a dark portrait focusing on war's damaging consequences and emotional losses - another personal subject for Bonneville who is infact a Vietnam War veteran.
A world-class guitarist, harmonica player and hard-hitting songwriter, Ray Bonneville combines infectious grooves with tough, poetic storytelling, and Goin' By Feel clearly marks the artist at the height of his powers.
