When Ray Davies says "Maybe I've always been old", on the DVD Americana: A Work In Progress, it surely means he has always been consistent, reliable and true to form, because on this new solo effort Ray Davies truly shines. Every song has great lyrics with echoes of the Preservation Acts, Muswell Hillbillies, Sleepwalker and Misfits coming through the songs. These songs, however, are filled with contemporary political and social commentary, regarding American society and the human condition. The DVD is only a little over 20 minutes, although it is a welcome extra providing glimpses of "The Story Teller Tour" and insight into the places that inspired the source for songs on this new CD. I've always felt Ray Davies is the Shakespeare of our times and this new CD makes that point very clear. As a longtime Kinks fan, I am very happy to know that Ray Davies still has something to share with us. I could only wish that Ray would get together with Pete Townshend to make a CD along the lines of "Rough Mix" which Pete made with Ronnie Lane. They could call it "Over The Top".
