Free Music Notes for Gossip in the GrainFree Music Review: Just too good for words Hit: 5 Stars
Where do you start in describing this man's music? It is varied, subtle, souful, poetic, beautiful, haunting, romantic and fun. A lot of other adjectives would also apply, but maybe you get the idea...I LOVE his music! I just discovered it about a month ago and within a week bought all 3 of his CDs. He started out strong with Trouble and gets stronger and better with each effort. I think Gossip in the Grain is his best yet; if it contained nothing but the poetic beauty of Winter Birds I would not regret buying the CD. But there is so much more...Sarah, Let It Be Me, I Still Care for You (the best), and the poetic spirit shining through again in the beautiful, Gossip in the Grain. And you just gotta love the fun of Meg White and the foot stompin', hand clappin', Henry Nearly Killed Me, and even the twangy, goodtime, Hey Me, Hey Mama. No one could accuse Ray LaMontagne of being a one song artist. He is a genius in many different styles. Interviewers don't seem to like him because apparently he is painfully shy - just leave the poor man alone and appreciate his work! He is without a doubt the best artist I've come across in a long time! If there were a 10 star option, I'd give him that.
Free Music Review: Ting Tang Whada Whada Lamontagne! What?? Anyway... Hit: 5 Stars
Ok I see that some reviewers have given Ray an unfair rating on this album. One reviewer said that on some songs it sounded like Ray was channeling Ray Charles and Johny Cash, and acted like that was the highest point of this album. Now I get that Ray's voice is full of soul and he has been influenced by some of the past greats, and that tends to pull in some of the older audience. But when Ray doesn't give them that redundant bluesy/soul sound they get all pissey and call it filler and say they just don't get it. What they fail to realize is that Ray is an artist of his own time, and of course will "channel", if you may, some of his past influences, but in all is more of his own self. I have learned to love his first two albums equally as they are a part of a growing process of a true artist, and after giving this album a couple listens I already know that I will love this one just as much as the first two. If you are on the fence about buying this album and are thinking about passing just because some stubborn oldies didn'nt get "When A Man Loves A Women" (Although a fantastic song!!) 10 times. Wonder no more and purchase this songwriting genius' latest masterpiece!!!
Free Music Review: Sold! New Fan. Hit: 5 Stars
I had never heard of Ray LaMontagne before Amazon's recommendation engine pointed out to me that people frequently bought Martin Sexton's "Solo" along with "Gossip in the Grain." I'm a huge fan of Martin Sexton since about a year ago, and looking for more amazing folk/rock music to experience.
So I sampled a few tracks before downloading mp3s for "You are the Best Thing" and "Let It Be Me." Repeated playings of these tracks quickly lead to buying the rest. (And then regretting not buying the physical CD.) Love the whole album, listening to it many times the past couple of days, and now waiting eagerly for his first two albums to be delivered.
The songs really move me. Emotional, honest, real. Ray's voice is superb. "I Still Care For You" didn't click right away, but I quickly grew to appreciate it along with the rest. I don't understand the hate for "Meg White" in other reviews -- it's another good tune and a nice change of pace. "Winter Birds" also good. Mellow, yet engaging. (I don't really know what that means.) All the tunes are awesome. So glad to have found this artist and that I have more to look forward to.
Free Music Review: Where has this guy been all my life!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Ray was suggested by Amazon as a possible choice while I was looking for Joe Purdy cd's. I was totally blown away! I love Joe Purdy, but Ray's voice is definetely the better of the two. He reminds me of a cross between Woody Guthrie, Van Morrison and Joe Cocker!!!!!! Go figure. Check him out just to verify that for yourself! While I was trying to decide if I wanted to purchase this cd, my husband passed the library doors and poked his head in to ask who I was listening to. Very unusual for him to notice the music. I asked why and he said, "get it"! He is a big fan of Joe Cocker and Van Morrison both, so that makes sense. I spent the better part of August entertaining guests on our screened in deck with this cd playing. Everyone seems to be as impressed as I am. Good steaks and BB-Q and wine with Ray playing for us in the background. It doesn't get much better than this! Don't know where he's from or where he's going, but he fits right in with our easy going, grass roots, Kansas life style! I feel safe in saying you will love this cd as much as I do.
Free Music Review: Ray LaMontagne turns out a great album (Again) Hit: 5 Stars
This is an amazing album all around. Ray LaMontagne is a musical genius with an amazing voice and a knack for making amazing songs. This album incorporates sort of a new style into LaMontagne's routine indie style of music. His new fast paced, upbeat songs are a refresher from the norm. (not that we needed one, we like his regular style just as much!) The new songs bring almost a country feel (is it possible?) to LaMontagne's music. This album is not much like his others. To compare it to musically, I would say it is similar to "Raycharles LaMontagne" and somewhat different from "Till The Sun Turns Black" in the type of songs composing the albums.
My favorite song on the album is "I Still Care For You" because it has the same deep, complex, and faraway epic feel as his song "Be Here Now."
I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes any of LaMontagne's music, I never get tired of him. I am very happy with my purchase of "Gossip in the Grain."
