Free Music Review: Great Gospel Ray...

Curb Records issued this collection in 1996...it contains 13 songs of faith and inspiration. There are quite a few songs on here that Ray re-arranges in his own kind of way while on other songs he sticks to the original arrangements...plus there's a couple of songs on here he wrote.
The material on this collection dates back to 1969-1971. I especially liked the way the songs appeared on the fold-out cover...complete with songwriter credits and publisher credits. I also liked reading the liner notes by a guy named Don Ovens. This collection could easily have been promoted as a re-issue of TURN YOUR RADIO ON with bonus songs added but it wasn't. This collection, in all honesty, came up out of the blue...it's one of those kinds of albums that used to pop up every now and then for a quick profit and then go out of print quickly.
Since it's release in 1996, TURN YOUR RADIO ON has been issued on CD and MP3 format, coupled with his album, MISTY.
Ray's gospel singles became hit songs on the Adult-Contemporary format in the early 1970's. The format, though, was called Easy-Listening at the time...some called it Middle-of-the-Road, or MOR. The hits on this album were plenty: "Turn Your Radio On" was a Top-20 country hit; "A Mama and a Papa" and "All My Trials" were both Top-10 Adult-Contemporary hits; "Have a Little Talk With Myself" originates from 1969 and it hit the country charts; and "Everything Is Beautiful" hit #1. Originally, "Everything Is Beautiful" and "A Brighter Day" were not part of TURN YOUR RADIO ON...the original 1972 gospel album contained only 11 songs...this Curb collection tacks on those two songs, giving the collection 13 songs total. As far as the TURN YOUR RADIO ON album goes...it was a Top-20 success on the country chart in the spring of 1972.
The other songs you'll hear include "I'll Fly Away", "Love Lifted Me", and "Glory Special" all performed in his arrangements. Ray wrote the gospel shouter "Why Don't You Lead Me To That Rock" as well as the majestic "Will There Be Any Stars?" in addition to "A Brighter Day", "Everything Is Beautiful", and "Have a Little Talk With Myself".
Ray's brother, John, wrote "Let Our Love Be a Light Unto The People".
