Free Music Review: Magical debut album from a Patty Loveless fan

I remember that it took a long time for this album to appear but it was certainly worth the wait. I don't know how many songs Rebecca recorded before this album was finally released but the composition of the album seems to have changed a few times along the way. On my copy, the booklet gives details and lyrics for twelve songs (the same twelve as listed on the track listing here and in that order) but only eleven of them actually appear on the album (and not in the order they are listed) - one song (I don't paint myself into corners) being replaced by another (Dancing in God's country) that isn't mentioned in the booklet. I'll concede that the replacement track is one of the best tracks on an album that was in any case excellent, but I'd still like to hear the other song, especially as the replacement can be found on the follow-up album (Forgive) - assuming that the track listing is correct. I see from other reviews that some people have the CD exactly as listed so it may be that the album was changed for release in the UK, but the booklet certainly wasn't.
Rebecca co-wrote most of the songs here, at a time when she was (I think) still a teenager. No doubt this explains the upbeat nature of most of the songs, since she won't have suffered too many of the problems that usually come with age and experience. Even the love songs are generally full of optimism and hope although she occasionally shows that she can do sad songs too - Melancholy blue (one of the few songs that Rebecca didn't co-write) proves that. Of the songs that Rebecca co-wrote, three songs (Was it as hard to be together, You're not a memory yet, Believe it or not) show that there is some sadness in Rebecca's life - or else she wrote these songs by observing what other people go through - but the rest of the album has a really upbeat feel to it that those four songs cannot dampen.
Rebecca shows in a couple of songs that she in an outdoor type. You might expect this of a country singer but so many of them like the city life these days. In one song (Move me), Rebecca complains about yet another Friday night dinner and movie - what she really wants is to go swimming in an icy creek, to go hang gliding and bungee jumping and a whole list of other outdoor activities. Another song (Out here in the water) is about going fishing in the lake.
Among the upbeat love songs are Jesus Daddy and you, When my dreams come true, Heart sounds and You're real, all of which are really happy songs. But the best songs of are two up-tempo songs to get those toes tapping - the aforementioned Dancing in God's country and the final track, Tennessee in my windshield, in which Rebecca sings about leaving her Kentucky home to pursue a music career in Nashville, driving down Route 65 with a Patty Loveless record playing on the radio.
As an upbeat contemporary country album that traditional country fans can appreciate, this one is hard to beat. Rebecca may not be able to make up her mind what color her hair should be (the booklet shows pictures of her with hair of different colors) but she started her career with an outstanding country album - one that her hero, Patty Loveless, would surely approve of.
