Free Music Review: Rocking But Still Country

Too much of what passes for country music today is simply arena rock with a twang. At the other end of the spectrum, there are the traditionalists (and I love them) -- Alison Krauss, Del McCoury, Sierra Hull. But being raised on rock, I have a long fascination with the "alt-country" genre. Not many can successfully occupy the space where the country part is more than 51%. I'm happy to say that Reckless Kelly is succeeding. Not just another Texas bar band that substitutes energy for melody -- these guys know how to write a great song, how to rock that song, yet stay genuine. Who might I compare them to? They have the musical sensabilities of Wilco, but Wilco is clearly a rock band and RK is clearly a country band. Let's say that they are a nice blend of Wilco, Robbie Fulks, Steve Earle, and Hank Jr. This is a great album that you'll enjoy on the first listen.
