Free Music Notes for Blood Sugar Sex MagikFree Music Review: The closest thing to "Modern Masterpiece" you're likely to hear Hit: 5 Stars
Yes this is a very good party album, Flea is an an awesome funk bassist and Anthony Kiedes' raps are great - I'm not a big rap fan, either! And I also love how the Chili Peps mix in some heavy guitars - being a fan of Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, etc, I do like good headbanging music (though it's not all I like). And the ballads Breaking the Girl, I Could Have Lied and especially the smash Under the Bridge are all excellent - unlike most hard rock bands, these guys can cut great ballads! But the funk songs are the best - Give It Away is certainly the song most people think of when they think of the Chili Peppers. Great reason for that! Suck My Kiss sounds like a cross between AC/DC and Parliament; Power of Equality is a great rap/funk/social commentary thing, My Lovely Man is very emotional... yeah. But there are some fillers: The title track is sort of bleah, and the cover of Robert Johnson's They're Red Hot is more of a joke song than anything else. And both Funky Monks and Sir Psycho Sexy, while good, go on a bit longer than usual. Still it's a solid album, and if you're a rock fan, be it classic, alternative or other, this should be in your collection. Generally I detest alternative rock, but this is an exception - the Chilis are certainly the best band to form in the past 20 years.
Free Music Review: A Masterpeice In A Dull Time Of Rock Hit: 5 Stars
Well first off let me just say, this album is just brilliant. In a world where rock is doomed to cliches, one hot wonders, and backstreet boy-eque teen popularity, it is sooo nice to listen to an album like this. This album, (my favorite chilli peppers album) is loaded with not only rock, but alot of funk, blues influence, and is brilliantly concieved to the last track. Flea, unquestionably the most brilliant of todays mainstream bass players, lays down a slap free enviroment, and displays some oldskool two finger technique that blows away anything that Victor Wooten or other flash players can do, just because of his sheer soul on the instrument. John Frusciante (spelled wrong, sorry) Is also one of the most brilliant and talented guitarists in todays rock and throughout plays beautifuly through the ballads as well as the funk jams. And talk about a drummer, Chad Smith lays down some great beats and shines on Breaking The Girl. And last but certainly not least, is Anthony, who is just great, noone else sounds like him, great lyrics, great singing, ALOT of soul. (...) Overall this album ranks for one of top in the 90s, it hasnt lost anythign since its relase. [Forget] terrible corperate rock bands like linkin park and limp bizkit and get on the funk train with Red Hot Chilli Peppers!
Free Music Review: Best album of the Nineties Hit: 5 Stars
I am aware that Nirvana's Nevermind was released in the Nineties and that it was a groundbreaking album. However, I wish to argue that Blood Sugar Sex Magik is the best album of the nineties. The first thing that most listeners will notice about this CD is that it has 17 tracks. Then you may notice that every track is phenomenal. There is not a mediocre song on the entire album, it is all great. It was Blood Sugar Sex Magik that really defined the Chili Peppers and helped to make them stars. Most of the songs are very funky, but there are alos some very heart felt serious songs on the album. Blood Sugar definately defined Nineties alternative music. This album still gets radio play even today. In fact, all 5 songs that were released for radio are still played rather regularly almost a decade later. And the music is just as relevant and good as it was in '91. Blood Sugar Sex Magik has some of the best Chili Pepper songs on it. My personal favorites are: "Breaking the Girl", "I Could Have Lied", "Under the Bridge", and "Sir Psycho Sexy". But once again the whole CD is great, no weak points. I can't say enough good things about this CD. It is definately one of my favorites and in my opinion, the best album released in the nineties.
Free Music Review: The Best of the decade Hit: 5 Stars
The defining album from a band at the peak of its musical powers. Initially dismissed by some as being overly long with too much filler, Blood Sugar Sex Magik has endured to become the showpiece in the Red Hot Chili Pepper catalog. It is a remarkably cohesive song cycle and even the so-called filler songs, such as 'If you have to ask' and 'Funky Monks' underscore the spontaneous vibe that spawned the album. In much the same manner as Exile on Main Street and Abbey Road, B.S.S.M. works best when played from start to finish, rather than selected songs at a time. Yet there are still a number of standout tracks such as 'Give it away', featuring a charged-up sex rap from Anthony Keidis and 'I could have lied', which showcases the emotive lead lines of guitarist John Frusciante.Recorded in a mansion in the Hollywood Hills, Blood Sugar is the sound of a band living and breathing music as one, achieving the kind of musical telepathy that was found in the best work of bands like Pink Floyd and The Beatles. From the count-in intro of 'The Power of Equality' to the stunning coda of 'Sir Psycho Sexy,' Blood Sugar Sex Magik acheives a level of aural magik and spontaneity that set the standard for the rest of the decade. No band, the Chili's included, has matched it since.
Free Music Review: They're Red Hot Hit: 5 Stars
This is the other side of early '90s alternative rock, the side that had a badly needed sense of humor. The Chili Peppers have always had just the right attitude: passionate about the music but never taking themselves seriously at all. This is where everything "clicks" and they deliver an album better than anything they had done previously, or since (although everything "clicked" again last year for Californication--and it's not like their '80s albums weren't enjoyable). Yes, the album sprawls perhaps a bit too much, but there are no bad songs and everything seems to fit. A couple overly goofy moments (a Robert Johnson cover! ) are more than made up for by sweet ballads like "Under the Bridge" and "My Lovely Man" and rocking funk/punk numbers like "Suck My Kiss" and "Funky Monks" And who can forget "Give It Away"? The blend of funk, punk, rock, and even rap has never been equalled since; few bands (Living Colour and the Bad Brains are two of the only ones that come to mind) have ever been able to successfully occupy this stylistic niche. Of all the Chili Peppers' albums, this is the best introdction for the casual fan, and an essential purchase for anyone who like music, period.
