Free Music Notes for Blood Sugar Sex MagikFree Music Review: If You Have to Ask, Yes it's Good Hit: 5 Stars
I've never been a huge fan of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, but don't hate me yet. For some reason, their new album "Stadium Arcadium" really clicked with me so I went back to the album that most fans call their best and here it is..."Bloodsugarsexmagik".
I did like the album, I liked it a lot. But, while some fans may not agree with me, I like their new album better. This isn't a singles based album, by that I mean it's not an album where only the songs that were released as singles are good, the whole thing is good. All the tracks, for the most part, are pretty solid. But, I don't know...I just liked the songs on the new one better. This album does feature classic RHCP though like Give It Away, Suck My Kiss, Under the Bridge, and some songs that didn't recieve a lot of airplay like The Righteous & the Wicked, Naked in the Rain, and The Greeting Song. There are a lot of highlights to this album though. Flea cranks out some of his best basslines, John Frusciante has grown as a guitarist over the years but does some nice stuff on here, Chad Smith is a talented drummer who's stuff works well on here, and Anthony Keidis on vocals does a lot of cool & weird stuff with his voice on here. I think this is an album that people shoud hear and I'm glad I checked it out...Here are the tracks:
1. The Power of Equality-5/5-Good lyrics and a very funky cool song. The basslines are spectacular.
2. If You Have to Ask-5/5-Another really cool song. I like the way Anthony Keidis's voice sounds on this song.
3. Breaking the Girl-5/5-This song's good but it's weaker than the others.
4. Funky Monks-5/5-This is a great song, the best so far.
5. Suck My Kiss-5/5-This song is awesome, it's on the radio a lot which keeps me from liking it the most; but it's a killer track.
6. I Could Have Lied-5/5-These are usually my least favorite RHCP songs, but this song grew on me.
7. Mellowship Slinky in Bmajor-5/5-This is one of the best songs on the album.
8. The Righteous & the Wicked-5/5-This is probably my favorite song on the album, so far.
9. Give It Away-5/5-This song is killer. The beat, the vocals, everything.
10. Bloodsugarsexmagik-5/5-This song is cool, but I like the chorus...The verses are kind of, uhh.
11. Under the Bridge-5/5-This is a beautiful song. I like RHCP's funk songs mroe than their ballads but this is one of my favorite songs by them.
12. Naked in the Rain-5/5-This is another great song, in my top 5 favorite on this album.
13. Apache Rose Peacock-5/5-The lyrics to this song are very sexual and very cool.
14. The Greeting Song-5/5-This song has the greatest music background to it than the rest of the tracks.
15. My Lovely Man-5/5-Despite the homosexual sounding title the song is really good.
16. Sir Psycho Sexy-5/5-The lyrics in this song are very graphic, but very cool and the song itself is great too.
17. They're Red Hot-1/5-OK, they were trying something different but this song sucks.

Free Music Review: Monstrous, Powerful, Energetic, In-your-face, Sexy Funk... Hit: 5 Stars
I remember 1991 as a year when the compact disc began to gain serious popularity over the cassette tape as the musical medium of choice. More importantly though, 1991 laid the foundation for the next decade of what was to come musically, and was arguably one of the most important and influential years in music in the past 15 years.
Nevermind, Ten, Achtung Baby, Use Your Illusion I & II, Metalica's Black Album, BSSM...
It blows my mind to think that these albums--each monumental in their own respect and the definitive albums in the careers of their makers--were realeased in a single year, let alone in a span of two months (August and September, 1991) But this review isnt about 1991 or what Pearl Jam, Nirvana and the RHCP were doing in late August; it's about the most monstrous effort of all...an album that would transcend generations since its inception and leave a stamp on the lives of many of us now in our 20's and early 30's.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik is OUR album. You know who you are. It oozes sex and radiates with an energy that I can only describe as that. Its funk is ridiculous, and its power dictates our bodies when we listen to it...like a puppetmaster. Simply put, there's something that I can only describe as Magikal happening in this album. I can't put my finger on it, but those of you who own this album probably know what I'm getting at. It approaches the full 74 minute capacity of a CD, all along consistently maintaining its flow of energy and never once lets up.
For me, this is hands down THE definitive album of the last 15 years of my life. The other albums I've listed above are brilliant but BSSM covers more ground, is heavier, more powerful, deeper, and has more prescence. It left its mark on me long ago and continues to evolve with me. It's part of my essence.
I'd consider myself to have a diverse and extensive taste in and collection of music, and although I can't tell you exactly why, of all the music I have ever owned, this one cd has gotten the most spins and never tires on me.
BSSM barely managed to stay out of the mainstream and never got overplayed on the radio. Maybe it had soemthing to do with the other activity that year in music. Who knows. The result though is that this album has attained what I would describe as almost a cult-like following in that those of us who have owned it from the start have become part of it and simply "get it". It's a guy's album. Whether 15 and just listening to it for the first time, or 35 and had it since its release, there are a lot of guys out there with an intense passion for this album.
If you own this album and havent thought about it or listened to it recently, this is a friendly reminder to get it going again. If you don't own this album...well...that's too bad, but I guess its never too late to pick it up and experience the hype for yourself.
Cheers.
Free Music Review: Blood Sugar Sex Magic! Hit: 5 Stars
Released in 1991, produced by legendary hip hop producer Rick Rubin and the Peppers most famous album and probably even the best too. It's a legendary 90's album that gave the band a alot of popularity and a large amount of new fans. It's one of those album that is remembered by a whole generation. "Blood, Sex, Sugar, Magic" truly got the qualities that makes it played even today, 14 years later. It's catchy with it's funk, rock and hip hop merged, it's diverse from other albums at the time, it brings up some very important messages in it's lyrics and it got fantastic musicians in Kiedis, Frusciante, Flea and Smith. BSSM, is among the most funky of their albums and it's also what the old fans liked about the band and what made them standouts.
Many of the songs of this albums is a blend of rock, funk and hip hop, just like I mentioned. They are energic and loud. "Give it Away" that was a smash hit got all that, it's fast, funky, catchy and Kiedis almost raps through out the song. "Power of Equality" is yet another funky number, it's the album's first song and one of the best aswell. If you like this one, you will like the majority of the rest. "Suck My Kiss" also got the funky edge signed Frusciante but it's more rocky then the trademark Peppers song on this album. "Mellowship Slinky In B Major" and "The Righteous and the Wicked" are also funky with cheeky lyrics. "If You Have To Ask" is another great one, id' say it's soul-funk and reminds me of classic 80's funk, same with "Sir Psycho Sexy". "Funky Monk" and "Naked in the Rain" are also Funk-rock.
"Breaking the Girl" is one of 2 good ballads on this album, it's also one of the more well known peppers hits that also appear on their "Greatest Hits" album. "I could Have Lied" is more acoustic, and more of a rock ballad, both are great. The Title track with it's awesome funk riffs is better musically then it is lyrically. "Under the Bridge" is the trur masterpiece of this album though, it's a meliodic midtempo song, not at all like the majority here but it was a massive hit that everyone have heard of. "Apache Rose Peacock" is a midtempo song while "Greeting Song" is a superfast rocker. "My Lovely Man" was made for the deceases Polak that was part of the band til 1988. A midtempo song too. "The're red hot" doesn't fit it here, it sound more like a polka song made for a Weird Al Yankovic album, what amazed me though is that the peppers is capable of making all kinds of songs on their albums. If you were surprised by this, you would me much more surprised on the following 2 album releases.
Overall. This is a immense classic. A 5 star album, that meant alot for music and also for the fans. The Peppers is one of my personal favorite bands, and this album means alot to me. It's packed with funk, but it does have some other kind of songs too, as a whole this makes a good cd with over 70 minutes of music. You should not be dissapointed.
Free Music Review: One of the best albums of the 90's. No question about it. Hit: 5 Stars
Blood Sugar Sex Magik is, has been, and always will be the Red Hot Chili Peppers' best album. What else can I say that others have not? I can only say that this and Californication are the best albums to start with the Peppers. Here is a rundown on the songs:
The Power of Equality: 10/10 - Hard rocking, one of the best album openers ever.
If You Have to Ask: 10/10 - an amazing blend of rap, funk, and the high pitched vocals in the chorus are amazing.
Breaking the Girl: 10/10 - a break from the fast-paced madness of the first songs. A sweet ballad that is one of my favorites on Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
Funky Monks: 10/10 - this song has one hell of a bassline!
Suck My Kiss: 10/10 - this was one of the first Peppers' songs I heard, and it still holds a place in my heart. It makes me laugh all the time!
I Could Have Lied: 9/10 - a song similar to Breaking the Girl, with some great vocals by Anthony Kiedis.
Mellowship Slinky in B Major: 10/10 - a really funky track, and one of the best.
The Righteous and the Wicked: 10/10 - This song took a while to grow on me, but I am glad. Another perfect track.
Give it Away: 10/10 - Arguably their most popular song with some fun lyrics, some pretty cool guitar effects and a KILLER bassline.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik: 9/10 - a worthy title track!
Under the Bridge: 10/10 - now this is a great track. The Red Hot Chili Peppers would use this type of style in albums like Californication and By the Way more often than their funky songs. One of my favorite songs ever.
Naked in the Rain: 9/10 - what can I say? Another good track.
Apache Rose Peacock: 9/10 - a fast-paced song with some sexual lyrics.
The Greeting Song: 9/10 - another track that took a while to grow on me, but it is killer.
My Lovely Man: 7/10 - I do consider this the low point of an otherwise amazing album. It is not a bad track by any means, though I cannot put my finger on it...I just don't like it that much!
Sir Psycho Sexy: 10/10 - some of the rawest, funkiest, dirtiest music I have ever heard. The lyrics of this song make you feel so unclean that you might have to take a bath afterwards, but it is such a devilish song and a great one at that. It has one of the most fantastic endings of a Red Hot Chili Peppers song ever.
They're Red Hot: 8/10 - this is just a weird outro jam, and while others might think it is a joke or whatever, I kind of like it! It is fun to listen to.
Overall: 9.5/10
Grade: A
I treasure this album, and I always will. Go buy this album if you like to hear raw, vulgaric, beautiful, and powerful music. Highly recommended.
Free Music Review: Flawless. Hit: 5 Stars
There is not much else to be said in praise of this album which hasn't already been said, but this album is so great that it's worth repeating every word of it just to get my own two cents in. This is, to say the least, the Red Hot Chili Pepper's most eclectic release and is without a doubt the best album in their catalog to date. Quite simply, this is one of those rare albums where all the right elements come together to form something truly unique. Whether it's the outstanding production (thanks Rick Rubin), original and creative songwriting and use of once upon a time fresh musical ideas (this is when fusing rap and rock had still not become a career-ending cliche), or just sheer musical power, an area in which every member of the band shines, Blood Sugar Sex Magik is one of the best albums of the '90's, hands down.
Mixing a wide variety of styles, RHCP command rock, hip-hop, funk, and just about any other genre you can think of into their distinctly strange style, the rhythm section of Chad Smith and Flea being one of the strongest in the loosely categorized "rock" genre, while John Frusciante plays some of the craziest guitar lines in RHCP's history, Anthony Kiedis leading the band through an amalgamut of sex, drugs, love, and debauchery. This is truly rock and roll. Flea's bass playing is beyond stellar, achieving a prodigious status which many aspiring bassists could work a lifetime trying to replicate and never come close to succeeding, his playing always drawing my attention moreso than any other instrument on the record. This is not the normal role for a bass player, whose typical job is to follow the rhythm guitar in the standard rock band. But the Chili Peppers are not your standard rock band.
Stylistically and lyrically the album draws from many sources and the vibe alternates, sometimes drastically but never sounding forced, from track to track. The funk numbers are sure to get feet tapping, heads bopping, and dancers dancing, The Power Of Equality, Give It Away, and If You Have To Ask laying down some of the nicest grooves since anything out of the 70's. I personally tend towards the mellower numbers though, a very personal intensity contrasting the upbeat numbers, I Could Have Lied, Breaking The Girl, and the heroin anthem of Under The Bridge being the albums highpoints.
If you grew up in the 90's you already know this album rules, and if you kids out there with your Korn have never heard this, buy it to see how rock and roll should REALLY be done. As I said, all the elements come together on this one, and this album is a true treasure to my music collection.
