Free Music Review: Their Foot Was In...
Hit: 5 Stars

But, this made them welcome at home.

RHCP is one of those bands where you come in with expectations and you walk out with something you never once believed. While the band has mellowed down a bit, not commercially but musically, we look back at the changes the band has went through. If you popped in Freaky Styley, or even their self titled debut, you would not recognize the band, especially after listening to Blood Sugar Sex Magik...the band's 'Revolver.'

Blood Sugar Sex Magik, BSSM, is an album filled with morality, strength, weakness, and pain. While the previous albums dealt with insane stories of Catholic School Girls and Coyotes, we now begin to explore the band they are and are today. But, on the flipside, we are reminded of who they are and what they did. Nobody has ever done anything that sounds like RHCP.

With the opening song 'Power of Equality', one of the best off the album, we kick into the new sound of the Chili Peppers. This is fast funk with that alternative drive...who ever heard this before? The song is catchy, pounding, and jamming all at the same time. Flea does some of the most impressive bass lines ever, as well. The rest of the songs follow precisely, the arrangement is flawless here.

Both 'Funky Monks' and 'Suck My Kiss' are fan favorites and always will be. They're anthems in a way to anyone who heard it first come on the radio. To me, 'Suck My Kiss' is just as prolific as 'Satisfaction.' Yeah, I'm out on a limb, a strong one. 'Give it Away', my least favorite song on the album, is among a favorite to everyone. To say this song is my least favorite just shows how great this album is, how there really isn't anything drawn out or out of place.

The real piece of work in the album is, of course, 'Under the Bridge.' This may be so cliche, but it's true. Where would 'Californication', the entire album, be without this song? 'Under the Bridge' is the gateway to emotional feeling and attachment for this band. The song opened another door for the band and in a way, music itself. This is one of the most important songs and one of the reasons why this album is held to such accountability.

The ending songs, 'Under the Bridge' being one of them, that closes the album are just as fine. But, when you look back at the album, you just want to listen to it again. It's just that great. All in all, I don't know why I'm reviewing this, I mean, most have heard the songs, and most have the album already. But, for those who don't, you really should own this. As important as 'Abbey Road' is to a Beatles collection, thus, this is just the same.

1. Power of equality. This is the red hot chili peppers most politically active song they have written. Great lyrics against discrimination and awesome funky chorus.
9.5/10

2. If you have to ask. This is another awesome offering of funk, but the singing is a little odd for my tastes.
8.5/10

3. Breaking the girl. This song is awesome, one of the most original songs by the chili peppers. Starts out with frusciante's classic strum style and never lets up.
10/10

4. Funk monks. Another cool funky song, but this one gets a little annoying after awhile.
8/10

5. Suck my kiss. This song kicks ass! In your face, no nonsence and sensual rap rock that will have you banging your head and storming around like a madman.
10/10

6. I could have lied. Even more mellow then under the bridge. A sad song with an awesome guitar solo.
9/10

7.Mellowship Slinky in B Major. In my opinion this is the weakest song on the alblum.
7/10

8.The righteous and wicked. Cool song which is more slow paced then there other funk songs.
8/10

9. Give it away. this is their second most popular song of all time. Great song, but personally I wouldn't put in a top 10 rhcp list. Still a great song though.
9.5/10

10. Blood sugar sex magik. Hilarious song, funky and sexual.
8.5

11. Under the bridge. Everybody knows about this song, their most popular of all time. Probably John's most impressive guitar preformance of his career, and that is saying ALOT.
10/10

12. Naked in the rain. Love this song, it's about leaving humans and running around with animals naked.
9.5/10

13. Apache Rose Peacock. Pretty random song, great beat.
9/10

14. The greeting song. Love this song, reminds me alot of "easily."
9/10

15. my lovely man. Sounds alot like the greeting song, both our awesome.

16. Sir Psycho. This is simply my favorite song of all time. Dirty but Beautiful lyrics by anthony with amazing rythmic chemistry by the rest of the band. The last three minutes are a beautiful instrumental that fit perfectly with the first part. Again, this has to be one of anthony's best song lyrics ever.
11/10

17. Their red hot. This is just a little screw around, but I love it, it's really catchy!
8.5/10

The person below me is an absolute ignorant a-hole. 311 has zero artistic value when in comparison with RHCP. Call me when 311 writes ANYTHING with the merit that even begins to touch "Under the Bridge." Have you even heard of something called chord progression? because I'll tell you one thing, 311 sure hasn't.

And I can't believe that you even have audacity to bring up lyrics. First of all, most of the songs are funk rock, Thusly, it's party music: i.e. Sir Psycho Sexy, which is brilliant in its own way. Secondly, the songs that do call for different lyrical composition come through in every which way. Are you seriosuly trying to tell me that 311 has a song more meaningful than "Power of Equality?" Do you even listen to the lyrics? I think not.

Lyrical abilities aside, you must realize that you are basically taking Chad Smith, and extremely respected rock drummer, John Frusciante, hands down one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and Flea, (debatably)THE greatest rock bassist of all time, and saying that what many people believe is their greatest piece of work in BSSM, is garbage. I just hope you didn't listen one time and write that bull****. If so, your review is all the more less credible because you fail to realize one of the most key compenents to good music; the fact that it grows on you and it takes more than one listen. You just can't absorb it all in one take.

I have nothing against 311, they're not a bad band. But it's hard to give you any respect when you rip a band like Nirvana at the end of your review. I understand you are entitled to your opinion, but you have to see that you are contradicting yourself when millions of people love BSSM and Nevermind and you just shut that down like you are some kind of all knowing god.

Anyways, just to add some of my own opinion, this is my favorite album of all time and will always be. I feel like although the chili peppers have moved on and continue to make world class music they will never top what they did in 1991. Just too much emotion, attitude and musical ability when into that album. They went into it with something to prove and just ripped it up. I think Stadium Arcadium is definitely a step down for them. It's a great record but it lacks some of the artistic maerit that they had in their last four albums (minus OHM).

Free Music Review: John Frusciante shines...
Hit: 5 Stars

What makes Blood Sugar Sex Magik the greatest album of the modern era?

You could say it was Antohny hitting his prime in songwriting, with his vocal style at the perfect point between his early rapping days, and his latter melody heavy approach. You could argue its Chad's primal drum pounding capable of evoking out the most animalistic urges. You could make a case for Flea laying down bass grooves that just pop out at you and carry each track on its back. Afterall, it would be a challenge to identify 3 musicians in history who have been at such staggering heights, together, on a single album. But John just took it to the next level...

The greatest complement I can give to John is this: If Jimi Hendrix played sexfunk...this is what it would've sounded like. John makes BSSM the definitive guitar album of the '90s...in fact nothing else even comes close as a mix of both passion and skill. Wet, compressed, funkelicious tones make his playing especially memorable, as they accompany him on a wide range of song styles. Meet John Frusciante, guitar God. It came out of nowhere. John either failed to record on this level for Mothers Milk, or more likely was being held back with excessive multitracking and distortion. "Too macho" as John later admits. Theres something vulnerable and soft to BSSM, even through the heaviest funk tracks...something more is there that renders the "cock rock" label utterly futile. John's influence, no doubt.

I'm not going to go into a track by track analysis, because BSSM doesnt warrant one. It is as complete of a record thats ever been made...truly an album that cannot be fully appreciated without hearing ALL of it. I'll just add that the mastering on BSSM is fantastic...that is why we havent seen a remaster. What good is great music if it sounds like crap? (see their last 3 albums, with the exception of Steve Hoffman's vinyl mastering on Stadium Arcadium) Be thankful that BSSM came out before the loudness wars...it has acceptable dynamic range and definition...and is uh, musical sounding. BSSM is flawless from every angle. Unique is an understatement. We havent seen anything like it since, and I doubt we ever will again.
