Free Music Notes for Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Free Music Review: Classic from start to finish
Hit: 5 Stars

Wow, this album brings back memories, I remember listening to it non stop in the early 90's when I was only about 10 years old. I bought it after hearing Under The Bridge & Give It Away, and it doesn't dissapoint, all 17 tracks are worth listening to. However I stopped listening to The Chili Peppers some time ago, and haven't been overly impressed with their recent efforts, but I found this cd while searching through my house last week. It had been over 10 years since I last gave it a proper listen so I wasn't sure what to expect, my music tastes have changed a lot in that time, my music collection now consists almost entirely of hiphop, in fact I generally dislike rock music and hate rap/rock with a passion. Thankfully though I still love this album, I instantly remembered every track and I have been playing it since, it is staying in my collection.

Whether or not you are a Chili Peppers fan or even a fan of the genre you should still listen to this album once. People generally try to put this music into one genre, but they clearly draw their influences from many different types of music, from funk, rap and rock. In fact the reason why I found this so easy to get into is probably because I love funk & funk inspired music as well as the rap elements of this album. While you couldn't really say Anthony Keidis is a great rapper or singer there is something about the way he brings his lyrics across that I have always liked. There are also genuinely meaningful lyrics written by him particularly on the ballad type tracks such as Under The Bridge & I could Have Lied. The music is excellent mostly bass driven by Flea, and has a very funky sound to it, for my money this is by far their best album, though I can't comment on all their early work. The album contains a great mix of ballads & up-tempo tracks and from The Power of Equality through to Theyr'e Red Hot it's all excellent. If I had to pick favourite tracks i'd go with Breaking The Girl, I Could Have Lied, Give It Away, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Under The Bridge & Apache Rose Peacock. This is a classic album that has stood the test of time (and will continue to), fans of any music should enjoy this album, superb.

Free Music Review: The Chili Peppers' Best Work
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a Chili Peppers fan and I'd have to say this album exemplifies their best work. It is true that many of the songs might sound similar but only similar in style; not copying the same rythmic ideas over and over. While Mother's Milk was a good album as well, I think the band's sound matured. On Mother's Milk you find songs that are a bit more complicated, with faster and more intense solos from Frusciante and Flea and John using more distortion. On this album however, Frusciante uses distortion sparingly and keeps it on clean tone most of the time.
This allows for more development of the songs. You can hear that Frusciante and Flea wrote their parts together with the bass and guitar parts interwined to almost form one voice. Listening to tracks like the "Give it Away" you hear how during the verse, the bass starts a measure with a slide from A to G on beats 1 and 2 and then Frusciante's funky guitar part completing the measure on beats 3 and 4 with a chromatic descent E-D#-D. The album has a considerable variety with great acoustic tracks like "Breaking the Girl" and "I Could Have Lied". For the reviewer who said RHCP was ripping another one of their songs , "Soul to Squeeze" (yes a very good song) , Blood Sugar,Sex,Magik was released in 91 and Soul to Squeeze not till 93. The only thing I don't care for are some of Anthony's blatantly sexual lyrics on tracks like Sir Psycho Sexy, but the music is still superb. Flea shows why he is considered such a good bass player not by showing off with fast solo stuff but by writing bass parts that fit perfectly with the guitar parts. It is clear that on this album the band stressed more on getting a complete band sound more so than just writing the most complicated/show off stuff they could pull off.
If you are a metal head, you'll be craving the crazy fast and seemingly complicated riffs you so love and listening to this album you wont get them. By this time Frusciante had matured enough as a guitar player to be writing far more interesting guitar parts.
but...anyways...Just listening to how good Chad, John, and Flea play together is good enough to give the album five stars.

Free Music Review: undying greatness...my favorite record of all time
Hit: 5 Stars

In 1991, the Chili Peppers lived together over at Rick Rubin's mansion and recorded what would be their most talked about record. "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" is a kick [on the back] and a great way to spend this coming summer. Actually, I'd tie this with their latest "By The Way" as my favorite record. (Who says you can't love old AND new Chili Peppers?). When I hear this record, I hear 4 best friends, creating music because they love it and they love eachother.

"The Power of Equality" kicks open the album and it's all uphill from there. With this opening song the Chili Peppers show they have a social conscience and, with the LA riots happening around that same time, it makes this song even more powerful. This song, and most of the rest of the record, is funky and rocking at the same time. Flea and John Frusciante just gel together and it's great to hear. "If You Have To Ask", "Mellowship Slinky in B Major", "The Righteous And The Wicked", and "Apache Rose Peacock" follow that same fusion of funk, rock, and Anthony Kiedis' well-phrased lyrics. Some of the lyrics, especially those on "Sir Psycho Sexy", are explicit and there's a good reason for the Parental Advisory sticker...just letting you know, if you weren't already aware.

Moving on, you can't possibly forget the classic singles "Give It Away", the waltz "Breaking the Girl", the funk stomp "Suck My Kiss", and of course "Under The Bridge". No wonder this record is regarded as such a masterpiece.

I love this music and I love the guys in this band. There is something very moving about it all. Four best friends just loving life and creating music together is the coolest thing to see and to this day they're still creating music, which I feel, is still very much relevant and moving lyrically and musically. Anthony, John, Flea, and Chad just kick my butt and I think a lot of people will agree.

My personal top 5 favorites from this record are: "My Lovely Man" (moving tribute to Hillel Slovak), "The Greeting Song", "Breaking the Girl", "Give It Away", and "Funky Monks".
If you haven't yet picked up this record and you're interested, please do...I think you'll be pleased.

Free Music Review: An all-time, variety-filled, funky classic
Hit: 5 Stars

I never have been and never will be a fan of rap music. That holds true for both "gansta rap" as well as the more recent "rap metal". However, when you put together an album that is as funky, catchy, and rocking as this classic album is, I am more than willing to make an exception.

When this album came out, I was listening to bands like Tesla, the Black Crowes, and Damn Yankees. I didn't realize that grunge was about to take over the rock world, replacing my favorites heavy metal and pop metal within the mainstream. Independant of all of those realities was this band and this album. It took me a while to warm up to it (with all the rapping, after all), but once I did I realized it was a masterpiece.

Where to begin in raving about this album? "The Power Of Equality" and "If You Have To Ask" get the album off to a funky and at the same time rocking start. "Breaking The Girl" is a gorgeous, heartfelt song that is especially effective considering the funky songs it is surrounded by. "Suck My Kiss" and "Give It Away" are fun, funky rockers. "I Could Have Lied" is an accoustic ballad, but it includes obscenity and a very strong bass line (both of which are prevelent throughout the album). "Under The Bridge" of course is the accoustic, huge hit with a powerful message that everyone knows. Songs like "The Righteous And The Wicked", the title track, and "Naked In The Rain" are further rocking, funky delights. "Sir Psycho Sexy" is a very obscene and yet unforgettable song that shows how far these guys would go at that time.

This is the Chilis at their raw and gritty best. For sure, it is the album that truly brought them into the mainstream, but there is nothing mainstream about many of the songs on this album. After all these years, I still strongly recommend this album as a unique and diverse funky rock record filled with a variety of sounds and emotions.

Free Music Review: The Greatest Album Of The Last 10 Years
Hit: 5 Stars

Yeah, I know, that phrase gets bandied about so much in album reviews on this website so that it's almost lost all meaning, but nowhere is it more relevant and true than when applied to this masterpiece. Owners and lovers of Blood Sugar Sex Magik like myself will know that I speak without hyperbole when I make this claim. From the opening count-in to "The Power Of Equality" to the fadeout of crickets chirping at night alongside an empty highway, BSSM has the aura of a powerfully soulful and funky jam-session that is so irrepressibly tied to the 1990's and, more specifically, 90's California.
I don't quite know where to begin praising this album, such is the solidity and completeness of it there are no high or low points. With works of funk perfection in "Suck My Kiss", "Give It Away", "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", "Apache Rose Peacock", "The Greeting Song", "Sir Psycho Sexy" and the brilliantly hardcore finale in "They're Red Hot" (I defy anyone to keep completely still while listening to it), tempered by beautiful ballads in "Breaking The Girl" and the classic "Under The Bridge", the talent present in the Red Hot Chili Peppers portrayed on this album is almost scary. Anthony's unmistakable voice lends so much power and soul to his lyrics of love and lust, and Chad's drumming is perfect. Which brings me to John and Flea. If you haven't heard the symbiotic relationship between the former's guitar and the latter's bass, you haven't fully experienced music. Listen to Sir Psycho Sexy's two-and-a-half minute outro if you want proof. It's breathtaking.
The world's population is split into two sections: those who own Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and those who haven't bought it yet. Don't be left out. This album will move you, physically and spiritually.
