Free Music Notes for Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Free Music Review: a mix of old and new
Hit: 4 Stars

What I like best about this album is that you get a peak of their past funk style and their jump over the threshold into rock. It has every element of their many layered canvas. No band is more honest or true to themselves as this band. Although 'Under the Bridge' became their signature song at the time, it pays to listen to every song before this classic. Anything after Naked in the Rain, which follows UTB is a bit more graphic and may need to be monitored for younger audiences. My favorite is the funky rock tune, Righteous and the Wicked which proceeds immediately to the best version (studio versus live) of 'Give it Away'. You will not be sorry. Any new RHCP fan must appreciate their past to love their present.

Free Music Review: John Frusciante shines...
Hit: 5 Stars

What makes Blood Sugar Sex Magik the greatest album of the modern era?

You could say it was Antohny hitting his prime in songwriting, with his vocal style at the perfect point between his early rapping days, and his latter melody heavy approach. You could argue its Chad's primal drum pounding capable of evoking out the most animalistic urges. You could make a case for Flea laying down bass grooves that just pop out at you and carry each track on its back. Afterall, it would be a challenge to identify 3 musicians in history who have been at such staggering heights, together, on a single album. But John just took it to the next level...

The greatest complement I can give to John is this: If Jimi Hendrix played sexfunk...this is what it would've sounded like. John makes BSSM the definitive guitar album of the '90s...in fact nothing else even comes close as a mix of both passion and skill. Wet, compressed, funkelicious tones make his playing especially memorable, as they accompany him on a wide range of song styles. Meet John Frusciante, guitar God. It came out of nowhere. John either failed to record on this level for Mothers Milk, or more likely was being held back with excessive multitracking and distortion. "Too macho" as John later admits. Theres something vulnerable and soft to BSSM, even through the heaviest funk tracks...something more is there that renders the "cock rock" label utterly futile. John's influence, no doubt.

I'm not going to go into a track by track analysis, because BSSM doesnt warrant one. It is as complete of a record thats ever been made...truly an album that cannot be fully appreciated without hearing ALL of it. I'll just add that the mastering on BSSM is fantastic...that is why we havent seen a remaster. What good is great music if it sounds like crap? (see their last 3 albums, with the exception of Steve Hoffman's vinyl mastering on Stadium Arcadium) Be thankful that BSSM came out before the loudness wars...it has acceptable dynamic range and definition...and is uh, musical sounding. BSSM is flawless from every angle. Unique is an understatement. We havent seen anything like it since, and I doubt we ever will again.

Free Music Review: totally unremarkable

want to know why the music industry is suffering? when this is one of the "better" bands out there, this isn't saying much. the album is just blaze.

Free Music Review: The real Red Hot Chili Peppers
Hit: 5 Stars

Though they have become more radio-friendly and upbeat over the years, this is the album that truly defines the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This is the one that catapulted them into the life-changing world of popular music, the one that shows how they got their start, and the one that best displays their undeniable talent and insane chemistry. This collection of rhythmic and audacious songs is hardly recognizable to the band that produced 2002's By The Way and 2006's Stadium Arcadium, but it is nonetheless a showcase of outstanding music. This is the real Red Hot Chili Peppers, in all their "explicit lyrics" and tube-socked glory.

Free Music Review: Addicted to Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Hit: 5 Stars

From start to finish, Blood Sugar Sex Magik is a masterpiece with the perfect combination of funk, rock, and rap. It oozes sex with songs like Sir Psycho Sexy and Suck My Kiss. Produced by Rick Rubin, this is probably the best work the RHCP have ever done. John Frusciante's guitar playing is amazing and you can't say enough about Flea on bass. I listen to Blood Sugar Sex Magik everyday, it's extremely addicting. And to anyone who loves this record, i recommend you watch Funky Monks.
