Free Music Review: VERY COOL ALBUM, A NINETIES CLASSIC
Hit: 5 Stars

There are constantly less and less bands around that feel like they are going to be around forever.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers, who proved in 1991 that they were more than an underground band (which they had been for almost ten years before the release of this album) have also proved that they are going to be on the scene for years to come.
A lot of underground acts from the eighties found success in the early to mid nineties but never as profound. Usually they got their one big single and that was it.
The Peppers had a story to begin with. They were pulling it together after their founding guitarist died from junk, and a petrified Anthony Kiedis was trying to get clean. This story would be the inspiration for the most powerful song they would ever have. UNDER THE BRIDGE broke them wide open. ANd with good cause, that song is still as relevant now as it was in 1991. EVERYBODY knows that song.
As for the rest of this album, its all good. A few funky cuts, a few softer cuts....
If you've heard any of the albums that pre-date this one, you'll know that there was NOTHING like UNDER THE BRIDGE. The old stuff was extremely bass driven and often times just off the wall madness.
This was definatley the most inspired work by these guys and is one of those albums that we'll be hearing about for a long time to come.

Free Music Review: A Major Acomplishment With Resonant Vitality
Hit: 5 Stars

Some people call this the apex of their career. I wouldn't be inclined to disagree. Their first three albums showed a band moving from lazy funk onto a more funk-rock sound. However, filler and low running times (a limitation of the vinyl era) made them good, but not overly satisfying listens. 1989's Mother's Milk had a producer-induced funk-metal muscle that some have scorned. I happened to like this machismo, but still, the album was short and had its share of weak, unecessary tracks. Then came this 1991 album. Wow, it could've been a double LP! What about the filler? Well, this thing is pretty darn consistent. Tracks roll on and on, yet nothing sounds forced or out of place. The funk is at its funkiest here, and Rick Rubin let's the band perform as they please. It's good and natural fun. Often its in your face. Sometimes its not. Either way, its a fantastic snapshop of the band at its incendiary peak. Later efforts, like the overly-metallic/somewhat-psychedelic/mellow/akward One Hot Minute and the three post-return-of-Frusciante albums all show a band that can't belt out the funk with the same reckless abandon shown here.

Hightlights include: all those singles you know, plus "Mellowship Slinky in B Major," "The Power of Equality," "Funky Monks" and "Sir Psycho Sexy."

I'd suggest you immediately buy this if you simply enjoy music.

Holy crap. That's what i said after listening to this album for the first time. not a weak spot here, and if you say that Flea isn't the best bass player in rock history, you are officially on crack. The Power Of Equality, a thrashing rant about America's inequality, opens, and while technically the closer is They're Red Hot, Sir Psycho Sexy could close and we would all be just as well. In fact, Sir Psycho, a painfully slow funk epic that just about epitomizes the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 20+ year career, was originally going to be the album's closer. Other can't miss tracks are "If You Have To Ask" the funky follow-up to Power of Equality, Funky Monks, which is, as its name says, funky. John plays a great 4-bar intro to this one. Suck My Kiss follows that with no trouble. Give it Away is later, and is again one of the greatest Chili Peppers songs ever. It's about the theory that "The more you give, the more you ultimately recieve, so why not give it all away?" Under the Bridge is two tracks after Give It Away, and this epic about Anthony's addiction was probably the main reason that the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and it is rightfully so. An underrated song that comes right before Sir Psycho is My Lovely Man, a rocking tribute to the late Hillel Slovak. This is easily the best album of the 1990's, and high in the running for best all time.

Free Music Review: "I could not get enough"- Anthony Kiedis
Hit: 5 Stars

One of their most critically acclaimed albums, it is not difficult to see why BloodSugarSexMagik remains a classic, and pleaser to Chili Pepper fans. Expertise manifested on the guitars and drums, intensified by Anthony's vocals makes for a pleasant listening experience. Blood Sugar also show the bands willingness to be diverse. On the album starter "Power of Equality" Anthony provides a socio political message discouraging hate and bigotry, whereas songs like "Under the Bridge" (a personal anecdote of Kiedis' drug use) are more sentimental. The bands upbeat energy and variance in styles is recognized on tracks like "If You Have to Ask", "Suck My Kiss", "Mellowship Slinky in B Major", and "Give it Away" amongst others. On "If you Have to Ask" Anthony begins somewhat rapping about a wanna be gangst, and on "Suck My Kiss" hes more in your face, loud and direct. On these tracks Anthony raps, sings, and screams his lyrics displaying his versatility. The majority of the album contains an up beat, fast paced, and electrifying feel, yet standout tracks also include the slower, melodic "Breaking the Girl", "I Could Have Lied", and the all time classic hit "Under the Bridge". Overall the album has a funky, sentimental, and energetic feel all in one. Great album, and to quote Mr. Kiedis from "Under the Bridge", "I could not get enough."

Free Music Review: Tied to the 90's
Hit: 5 Stars

My life changed the day i heard the album 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik'. Not only it is often hard for a band to change there style from one album to another but also to write an album of such length, 18 songs which incorporate the dominant guiotar playing ability of John Frusciante and the speed funk punk of Flea. Tracks that stick in your head are, Sir Phsyco Sexy, Breaking The Girl, Under The Bridge, Apache Rose Peacock and Give it Away. Anthony Kiedis has written songs which are a narrative to his life. Under the Bridge describes his life when involved in the Mexican mafia and drawn into drugs by his friend, he survived the ordeal which inspired their biggest single release to date. Each time you listen you will find something new, for example listen to Breaking the Girl and see how many sounds you can define from the middle 8 then buy or borrow the film 'Funky Monks' and be amazed at the experimentation, the relaxed nature of this album. The Chili Peppers have not had a finer moment, Californication comes a close second but 1994 proved to be the year in which finally the world decided to take notice of the Chili's. Lets hope that the rap, punk, funk style never dies from the bands music. Live they are a bit dissapointing but you always no that their next album COULD amaze you once more.
