Free Music Review: Great live b-sides.

Another one of those two-part singles, this particular single (title track and leadoff single from the album "By the Way") contains the title track backed by two non-album b-sides, both live covers-- the Stooges' "Search and Destroy" and Funkadelic's "What Is Soul?".
Interested parties are advised to be careful-- there are two formations of the two parts of these singles-- if you're looking for all four b-sides, make sure you get a matching set.
So things have changed with the Peppers, and in many ways, "By the Way" is sort of a culmination of the band's career-- a chorus of clean tone guitars washed in vocal harmonies and a funky, slap-bass driven distorted verse mingle to put together just a fantastic song.
The b-sides are great- on "Search and Destroy" the Peppers bristle with a live energy and explosiveness, doing a relatively straight punk reading of the piece before opening up into a spectacular extended jam. "What Is Soul?" lets the Chili Peppers sink way deep into the groove of the piece and Anthony Kiedis makes up his own verse true to the original before opening into a frantic jam.
In the end, these live takes will likely please old fans of the Chili Peppers, and the performance is great. Recommended.
