It seems that each person has a different take on each song. Here's mine:
By the Way - - 10/10 Very memorable but overplayed, but that's not the chili peppers' fault -- awsome guitar and chorus
Universally Speaking -- 7.5/10 It's alright, but can get old after a while. I like the chorus.
This is the Place -- 10/10 Very cool sounds in this song. I didn't really understand but someone else said it was about incest, and kind of made sense. "I matched your DNA" "I don't wanna do it like my daddy did, I don't wanna give it to my baby's kid"
Dosed -- 9.5/10 A little slow but I can really relax when I listen to it, and it picks up in the chorus. I love the lyrics.
Don't Forget Me -- 6.5/10 I don't really like it, but it's ok. I don't really like the way it is sung. The guitar kinda makes up for that, though.
The Zephyr Song -- 9/10 The Zephyr Song! So relaxing and nice. Good thing to sing about, a nice breeze.
Can't Stop -- 8/10 The BSSM people will love this song. It's alright but the way it is sung sorta pisses me off, with all the starts and stops, the same way Don't Forget Me was annoying. I still like it a lot more than that song, though.
I Could Die For You -- 6/10 Bleh...to corny and slow. Guitar is good though.
Midnight -- 7.5/10 Great after the stupid violins, but the chorus could be better. Cool "owly" sounds in it to go with the midnight theme.
Throw Away Your Television -- I don't like the way it is sung again, because he comes in to hard with the "THROW AWAY." The guitar and drums are great in it, though.
Cabron -- 7/10 Eh, a little too latinny for me. Great guitar work though.
Tear -- 8.5/10 I love the way this song is sung. I like how well each verse comes in after the chorus. Chorus a bit dramatic, but the "woooos" go great in the background.
On Mercury -- 8.5/10 A lot of people didn't like this song but I dig it. I love the chorus, and the nice harmonica thing in the background. Crazy/fun lyrics, too, and I like the way he starts each verse. "Ah've got maself" "Ah'm lookin' up into"
Warm Tape -- 8.5 Again, a lot of people didn't like this song, but I do. Strange name for a song, and I don't really get the point of it, but I like the strange noise throughout it, and the guitar after Anthony sings.
Venice Queen -- 8.7/10 GREAT guitar in the beginning, and I like the slight pauses between the lyrics. Nice ending, relaxing without the singing starting for an entire minute until after it has been going. Nifty switch to acoustic.
All in all I love this CD. It had a variety of different types of music, and something can appeal to everyone, whether you are one of the old BSSM fans, or of their new, relaxing, and sometimes latin stuff.
Free Music Review: Californication Part 2 Hit: 5 Stars
This is truely another amazing beautiful masterpiece by the chili peppers. I bought Californication back in 99' when it was first released and I thought it was there best work since BSSM....I was wrong until this came out! It has that Californication feel but some of it takes you back to the BSSM days like Throw Away Your Television, By The Way, Can't Stop, etc. And song like Dosed, Zephyr Song, and This Is The Place take you back to the Californication days. Now I must review each song one by one...1) By The Way - By the way it is a great opener nice lyrics vocals and bass lines .... way overplayed 10/10 2) Universally Speaking - Kinda slow, mellow, you will start to like it the more you listen to it, nice guitar work 8/10 3) This Is The Place - This was one of the songs that I liked the first time I listened to it great vocals and bass on this one 10/10 4) Dosed - At first I thought this was another slow one but it actually picks up the pace during the song excellent guitar work at the end, bravo! Reminds me of Californication the song 10/10 5) Don't Forget Me - Another good song, not good enough to be a single but still you shouldn't skip this one 8/10 6) The Zephyr Song - Weird vocals, weird beginning, but all in all it is a good song, it can get boring after awhile, but good guitar/bass on this one 9/10 7) Can't Stop - The third and maybe the last single on the CD, good drumming, bass, guitar, reminds takes you back to BSSM 10/10 8) I Could Die For You - I didn't like this one at first but it sorta grew on me on 7/10 9) Midnight - This is one of the non-listenable ones but it is still good enough for a chili peppers song 6/10 10) Throw Away Your Television - Could've been a single but the message isn't radio-friendly. Although it does remind me of the BSSM days...and cuz of that i'll give it a 9/10 11) Cabron - I didn't like it at first it reminded me of mexican or jamacian music, but give it a try...8/10 12) Tear - Still worthy enough of a chili peppers song but it is worthy enough to skip 6/10 13) On Mercury - An ok song, but worthy enough to skip 6/10 14) Minor Thing - Also an ok song, but not listenable 6/10 15) Warm Tape - I didn't like it at first but thats probably why they put it at the end 7/10 16) Venice Queen - 15 & 16 are both good ways to end the cd to bad its already done 7/10 As you can see the 1-10 had all good ratings but the rest kinda went downhill this could be the next californication but I hope on there next cd they try and go back to there older roots instead of there recent stuff. It's an enjoyable cd to listen to no swearing, great vocals, great bass, drums, guitar work etc...worth the money if your a new chili pepper fan but as for old ones this might not be your favorite of all time.
Free Music Review: hotter than hot! Hit: 5 Stars
What can one say? This is red hot stuff! kiedis is a wordsmith... Frusciante is a guitar wiz...and of course you know about Flea and Smith. This stuff is the kind of groove you play at a hopping party...you don't stop...these guys are moving towards the future..they pull off brilliance that has never been heard before...Talent is elusive and often missed... Yet the Chili Peppers are on to something..they know the importance of moving forward...Talent shmallent...who cares...they are doing what they are doing... I ask no questions...I can't do what they have accomplished over the years...who has? very few...That says a lot. The tracks conjure up such a pure, sincere motivated sound..."By The Way" is a convincing opening salvo...added to it is a infectious rap by Anthony...makes the whole song sound so different from anything before...Makes one want to jump up and down...UnIversally Speaking almost sounds like an opening for a Counting Crows song...but quickly turns into a U2 sounding score...But just when ya think you have this song tabbed it sounds as if Elton John and Brian Wilson may have been included in this session YET IT IS SO DARN GOOD...IT BECOMES CLEAR THAT THIS IS ORIGINAL...IT COULD ONLY COME FROM THE CHILIPEPPERS...NOONE ELSE...such brilliance...Track Three...the flea song....Just listen to the bassline...Exceptional...Best thing since Joe Jackson's stepping out! Track 4...Compelling deep,dark,telling...Track 5...Can you just imagine listening to this in open air! Track 6...such a good groove Anthony's vocals fit this song like a glove...Great harmonies. Track 7...get ready to rock! Track 8 "I could Die for You"...The time where the party finds you kissing a beautiful stanger as the blue water reflects off the summer sky...Maybe wiping happy tears from her beautiful face..Midnight...beautiful opening orchestration...lends itself to a Johnny Marr style kickin riff...Great message..."Cabron"....a truly great song...what an opening riff...Anthony sings with such convictiom and insight "EVERYONE WOULD TAKE A CUE FROM ANYTHING YOU DO IF YOU WANT THEM TO." Not no mention the infectious Chorus. "Tear" the next song has such a strong step into the opening minute...as Anthony proclainms "this is my time"...The beach boys...I hope would"ve this song. Track 13...sounds like something Gwen Stefani and No Doubt is perfect for...BUT HAVEN'T DONE...Raw... Again...Fast lyrics and equally good guitar work!!It may be a "Minor Thing" But it is sure is catchy! "Warm Tape"...melodic almost spooky opening...wow...This song has something to say musically...Venice Queen polishes this cd...Anyone who has experienced Venice,Ca will feel the groove and make the ones who haven't been want to be there...Sigh...final statement...This is a benchmark Cd...
Free Music Review: Chilis Continue to Evolve Hit: 5 Stars
The Chili Peppers have once again taken their sound to the next level. Of their 8 albums, this is definitely one of the best crafted, and certainly the most song/melody-based. (for a little history)Their previous albums were as follows: 1984 - Self-titled debut 1985 - Freaky Styley 1987 - Uplift Mofo Party Plan 1989 - Mother's Milk 1991 - BloodSugarSexMagik 1995 - One Hot Minute 1999 - Californication The self-titled debut and Freaky Styley were both funky, horn/bass albums with a lot of fast rapping and chanting. The George Clinton production was obvious on Freaky Styley. I love them both. The Uplift Mofo Party Plan brought a bit more guitar with it, along with some more variation between the songs. It was a bit more accessible than the first two, seemed a bit more mainstream. Still great. Kiedis' vocals seemed a bit more impassioned/urgent. A mainstream sound finally started leaking into their music with Mother's Milk. (Of course, I wasn't born until the year Uplift Mofo Party Plan was released, but I am appreciating all of this music after the fact). Mother's Milk traded a lot of the chili's trademark funk for yet more guitar riffs and some more articulate rapping... even a little singing. Plus it has a pretty little ditty entitled "Pretty Little Ditty," from which Crazytown sampled that hook for butterfly. BloodSugarSexMagik, the '91 classic, brought funk to the big mainstream, and it was FUNKY. Funk + rap + sex + under the bridge... amazing. One Hot Minute was a departure. John had left, Dave Navarro was onboard, and this cd was a bit of a misfit. Anthony has said it was a bad time, but no matter how different it was from their other stuff, this will always be a great cd. As I cannot describe it, you will merely have to listen to it for yourself. Californication is something of a little brother to By the Way, but it is nearly perfect in that compromise. It has the funk of its old days, along with bits of the rap and Kiedis trademark delivery, but it also introduced some passionate singing and beautiful vocals that we'd never seen before from Anthony. By the Way takes that a step further. The rapping is virtually gone, and the entire album is sung. As it is, it is awesome. The choruses and melodies are gorgeous; not only infectious but compelling and pretty. The riffs are not as recognizable as they used to be, and the bass is nowhere near as up-front and abrasive. But this is just the new stage in their evolution. They are already 20 years old, and it excites me to think that they will continue to grow and make music. They are becoming more mature and their sound is as well.
Free Music Review: FINALLY, SOMETHING AS GOOD AS BLOOD SUGAR Hit: 5 Stars
** - means that since it is impossible to give higher than 5 out of 5, i'll point out that it still deserves to get a higher rankingBY THE WAY (4/5) - the title track and first single, this is what you'd expect to hear from the peppers, too bad its played way too freakin much UNIVERSALLY SPEAKING (3.5/5) - anthony kiedis says its one of his alltime favorite songs. although it is great, its not memorable THIS IS THE PLACE (4.5/5) - this is where the cd starts to shine, vocals are amazing, one of the harder songs DOSED (4/5) - one of the softer songs, but one of the better ones, the guitar mixes are subtle but wonderfully done **DON'T FORGET ME (5/5) - one word, CLASSIC, one of the harder songs, a lot of yelling, great chorus THE ZEPHYR SONG (4/5) - probably the second single, a great radio track, puts you in a good mood **CAN'T STOP (5/5) - again, one word, CLASSIC, one of the greatest guitar riffs EVER, john is a guitar playing genius. its very funky and awesome to play really loud I COULD DIE FOR YOU (4.5/5) - this is where you start to notice the amazing harmonies put together, a chorus to remember MIDNIGHT (4/5) - sounds like a radio track, orchestra mixed in gives nice touch, amazing chorus, great harmonies THROW AWAY YOUR TELEVISION (3/5) - if there has to be a worst song, this is it. not much guitar, doesn't sound like a chili peppers song, but still good. CABRON (4/5) - at first i hated this song, but it really grew on me. very latin-flavored and addictive spanish guitar sounds. **TEAR (5/5) - THEE surprise on the album. like what everybody else says, it sounds just like the beach boys but with the chili peppers sound engraved in it. a CLASSIC for years to come. ON MERCURY (4/5) - a ska sound to it but catchy. upbeat and cool. sounds like it should be on one of their earlier records MINOR THING (5/5) - sounds like an earlier peppers song which is great. some sweet bass during the verse, great fast-paced guitar and background harmonies during the whole song WARM TAPE (4/5) - another song that grows on you. effects that sound a little weird but are overshadowed by great vocals **VENICE QUEEN (5/5) - being at the end of the album, some might overlook one of the greatest songs (i've said that way too freakin' much) ever made. what is very moody for the first half of the song becomes an all out melodic and harmonic, another CLASSIC that will get stuck in your head. Overall, this is the best album alongside Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
