Free Music Notes for Californication

Free Music Review: EVOLUTION: Thy name is Californication.
Hit: 5 Stars

Were you angered by the end of "One Hot Minute"?

Fear not, the Peppers are back.

The music has changed, no doubt... but for their own sake, it was for the better. How many energy-funk songs can you produce before everyone calls you a one trick pony?

Frusciante makes the difference here, along with Kiedis's much improved lyrics, filled with meaning, unlike Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik. (which was an excellent album, but lyrically not nearly the best

Californication proves that the boys can still rock it out hard and slowly put you into a trance at the same time. The music has changed, but it is still phenominal.

Noting the songs, one by one...

-Around the World. Perfect example of my last paragraph. They picked a perfect song to kick off the album, with Flea kicking in heavily.
- Parallel Universe. Trippy, good bass lines, excellent solos, one of the harder songs, they really kick out the jams here.
-Scar Tissue. You've all heard it. Chillin', yet catchy.
-Otherside. Again, you've all heard it.
-Get on Top. WOW! what a song... they kick out the jams once again, and slow it up around the chorus, but not too much, it keeps you jumping.
-Californication. You've all heard it. Excellent song.
-Easily. Lyrically, one of their best. Not much funk, more of an alt. rock, and it's filled with deep meaning.
-Porcelain. An utter disappointment. The only song I didn't like.
-Emit Remmus. They hit a little bit of a rut here with this song and the last one, i don't care much for this one either.
-I Like Dirt. Kinda hard, but not really. It's an average song, kinda sticks in your head.
-This Velvet Glove. Another song filled with meaning. Most of them are when the peppers talk of addiction. Not very fast-paced, but still good.
-Savior. The idea itself is great. They're talking about Frusciante's return to the band. What a relief.
-Purple Stain. WARNING! THIS SONG WILL STICK IN YOUR HEAD! My favorite on this album, it will be yours too if you love that catchy funk style. Extremely trippy as well.
-Right on Time. Quick paced, shortest song on the album. Still impresses, fast to slow, and then back to fast again, it's catchy.
-Road Trippin'. More of a ballad, rocks you slowly. Good way to end the album.

Free Music Review: STILL RED HOT!
Hit: 5 Stars

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers haven't released that many albums considering how long they have been together, but you know when they do release an album, it's going to be something special.

Californication is the result of a good few year's work, writing, recording and producing. The Chilli Pepper's production mastermind, Rick Rubin, produced this little gem.

Actually it's not a little gem, its a big gleaming thing, crying out the words "Im a big gleaming thing!" The Chilli Peppers knew very well what type of album they were making here. It's grand, it can be complex and intricate, and it can be all out funk rock.

I'd say the guitar sequences and riffs are one of the most major assets of this album, doing a lot of holding together. The guitar glue can be heard clearly on tracks like 'Scar Tissue', 'Californication' and 'Road Trippin'. In the old days, The Chilli Peppers were influenced heavily by disco, funk and soul acts like George Clinton and the Parliament. Nowadays in their music you can still hear Flea's funked-up bassline and the out of the ordinary rhythms, but its dressed with newer influences, i would say indirectly the Smashing Pumpkins or Nirvana being examples. The Peppers have certainly moved with the times, but remained with their very unique sound.

Anthony Keidis' voice has definetley improved over the years. The songs on Californication allow him to do things that he has previously not done very much (ie Actually sing instead of just rapping). There are a lot of very mellow songs onthis album, like 'Porcelain' and 'Road Trippin'. I like the Chilli Peppers when they are mellow. It gives a good break from the hard stuff, and also Keidis' voice suits them very well.

The hard stuff is also very good. The melodies on some of the chouruses are brilliant, for instance one of my favorites is 'Get on Top'. The tunes are just great and theres plent of them. You forget how many of these tracks they have actually released- 'Scar Tissue', 'Otherside', Around The World' and 'Californication'- all brilliant songs.

One worry is that they might get too commercial. This album's more commercially sounding than all of the others, despite it's great music. I think the Chilli Peppers are sensible though, and they won't sell out. This has been there most successful album to date, and i hope they can keep on doing it.

Free Music Review: If you don't have it, get off the crack pipe and get it
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this CD, as most of you have, wanting to hear "Scar Tissue". That is an immensely good song. But I am a person who likes the others songs usually more. Now, let's start reviewing this album. "Around the World". Wow. This song starts off as a extremely good guitar riff. And the song just makes you want to jump up and down and party. "Parallel Universe" has to be a cool song to go on "The Blair Witch Project" soundtrack. That would be cool. If you haven't seen the movie, get off the crack pipe and see it. "Otherside" is an awesome song. I like how he says the first "i don't" in the chorus. "Get on Top" is a cool song, but not great. "Californication" is the third best song I have ever heard, behind "Sun" by Smashing Pumpkins and maybe "Porcelain", which we'll get to later. "Californication" just moves the soul in so many ways. It almost makes you cry. "Easily" is an okay song. I don't see why so many people like it. But it fits well into the rampage of songs. Now, "Porcelain". How could anyone not like that song. It's like, I don't know. It makes me feel good inside, I guess. Definately one of the best songs of the decade. "Emit Remmus". What kind of name is that? Oh well, life goes on. This song rocks, and if you don't like it, hit yourself in the head with a bat. "I like Dirt" is a wierd title, and a wierd song. Not one of the best I've heard, but oh well. "This Velvet Glove" is an awesome song, and it makes me think about the road, driving on for endless hours. "Savior" sounds like something for the seventies or something. But it is a good song. "Purple Stain" is a wierd song, but it's okay. It's a good song. "Right On Time" is wierd to start off, but when it gets to "it's right on time" it sounds completely awesome. If only it was longer. Now here is "Road Trippin'". I don't know what to say about this extremely awesome song. My mom says it sounds like something from the seventies also, like a "timeless" song. It is a pretty song, and deserves to be the nation's anthem. LONG LIVE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS!!!!

Hit: 5 Stars

Staring at the amazon sales rank of ten I'm shocked. This is the first RHCP album I've bought and it really broke the pop monotony of the radio and tv. This album blew me away. I listen to a wide variety of music, and I have alot of great cds and of them all I think this is the most unique and charming. And for reasons I cannot explain, the broad song ranges seem to fit perfectly together like puzzlepieces and make one solid smooth album that is totally infectious. You can't not like this album. The Lyrics are modern sounding but still have some cryptic tones. Anthony's voice carries through in royal inflection through Saviour which has just recently become one of my favorite songs. It's epic and endearing, in my ears it's up with Stairway and Voodoo chile slight return, This is a complete and whole album. There is nothing missing here from funk to punk. Every instrument is masterful including the voice. The band has such a great vibe together that you notice it right off hand. This album is unusual and I've never been more pleasantly surprised buying an album from a band for the first time. These guys are definetely worthy of whatever praise they get. The guitar work is mind-boggling in it's precision and Flea's bass is a history maker every time out with it's awesome clarity which doesn't always shine through with other talented bassists like Jason Newstead of Metallica who often gets drowned out. Anthony is one of the most underated singers today, probably due to his rap stylings. Chad props the band up with drum loops that are so technically close to perfect percussion that I wonder how the band's chemistry would work if he hadn't have arrived on the scene. This album goes from making you dance to making you daydream and visualize the pictures they paint to making you laugh. Like I said, there isn't anything left out of this cd. It has non-stop musical chemistry and no times where there seemed to be filler or unecessary repetition that could be cut out. None at all. This is worth it 100 % and one of the few records in my collection that I would replace IMMEDIATELY if it got damaged. It spells musical style and makes the phrase of ''Just the right amount of everything.'' come in handy when talking about it.

Free Music Review: Their best album
Hit: 5 Stars

These review pages are full of people saying it's not at all like Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and I agree, it's not. But it's not meant to be. If you don't like the Chili's new, more soulful direction, then I say go listen to the White Stripes. Yes, I own Blood Sugar, and it's an excellent album, but a little soulless at times. However you could never accuse this album of being without soul. There are a few too many weak tracks, but when it's good, it's stunning: one of the best albums I've ever listened to.

Around the World: The best track. A catchy funk number combined with a wonderful chorus. When I first bought the album I listened to this track three times before moving on to track 2. 10/10

Parallel Universe: Another excellent number. A guitar-driven, exicted build-up to a scorching chorus.10/10

Scar Tissue: Couldn't be more different from the last track, but just as good. Quiet, soulfull, heartfelt - brilliant! 9/10

Otherside: One of my personal favourites. The guitar melody playing through the song is excellently catchy, and the song has an superb sense of build-up. 10/10

Get On Top: The most rock-styled number on the CD. Good, very good, but doesn't stand out from the other songs here. 8/10

Californication: There's no point reviewing this since you've almost certainly heard it before, but it's a great song, one of the best. 9/10

Easily: Another of my favourites. Strong, funky, and extremely powerful. 9/10

Porcelain: A bit of a love-it-or-hate-it song. I like it personally, but you might not. Try it. 7/10

Emit Remmus: This is where the album starts to stutter a little. An unspectacular slowish rock song. 6/10

I Like Dirt: No, I don't. 3/10

This Velvet Glove: A song that tries to sit between rock and soul, and is mostly successful. 8/10

Saviour: Doesn't quite succeed what it sets out to do but an OK song, powerful in places. 7/10

Purple Stain/Right On Time: Neither of these songs stood out for me. Not great. But just when I was about to drop this album to four-stars....6/10

Road Trippin': A sweeping, tangible, scorched, lonely masterpiece. The heat of the desert, the long dusty roads, will be right there in the room with you. They could have made this song 3 hours long without it losing its power. 10/10
