Free Music Review: One of the best of the 1990s
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a big '80s music fan and was disappointed with what much of the '90s had to offer musically--at least in the first half of the decade. One of the highlights, without a doubt, was the Chili Pepper's breakthrough album "Blood Sugar Sex Magic". Well, after not matching the success and appeal of that album for years, all changed a couple of years ago with the release of another masterpiece--that being "Californication". Yes, a lot of the heavier funk sound is not present here, but that doesn't take away from this album's greatness. The lack of obscenities on the disk was a surprise, as certain previous efforts are of course full of them.

There is still some noticeable funk in songs like the leadoff track "Around The World", "Get On Top", and "I Like Dirt", which are all great songs. Equally great are the three big hits off the album, including the breakthrough first single "Scar Tissue" and the title track. "Otherside" is an absolute favorite--perhaps my favorite slow song from them since the breathtaking "Breaking The Girl" off of "BSSM". "Road Trippin'" is another surprisingly mellow and yet great song to end the album. In between, there is still a lot of stuff that is truly Chili Peppers but with a somewhat different vibe than some of the old stuff. Despite the mellowness of parts of the album, a very enjoyable listen that flows and (unlike another reviewer said) is anything but boring. All in all, still a must-listen for most fans of this band. This effort must have gained them a lot of new fans as well.

Free Music Review: A new direction
Hit: 5 Stars

Californication, the Red Hot Chili Peppers newest album is an eclectic mix of funk, folk, rock, and blues, and a very well thought out piece of work. While there are no songs that strike the same chord as "Under the Bridge", "Give It Away" or "Higher Ground", this album is overflowing with sounds to please the ear and soothe the soul. Songs like "Californication", "Parallel Universe", "Scar Tissue", and "The Other Side" among others are a departure from the well-treaded funk the Peppers are known for, but this new direction seems to fit them quite well. In fact, the songs that don't follow their typical funk and rock moniker on the album are the ones that are the most memorable, while songs like "Right on Time", "I Like Dirt", and "Get on Top" are fairly despensible. Still, despite these somewhat filler-esque songs, the album as a whole flows together very well and is a real pleasure to listen to again and again. The real clincher this time around is the newly found depth of the lyrics. Songs like "Parallel Universe", "Californication", "Porcelain", "Easily" and "Otherside" are packed with some great lines that are filled with thought and lush imagery, something the Peppers have not exactly been accused of having much of in the past. Overall, while the Peppers may not rock as hard or funk it up as much as on previous efforts, their newly found songcraft found on "Californication" is sure to bring forth new fans and maintain the old ones.

Free Music Review: Excellent...just excellent.

RHCP's mission for Californication was to bury the so-so One Hot Minute (which is probably the Peppers' most forgotten album). I have to say, they were pretty successful.

Californication might be the Red Hot Chili Peppers most well crafted album. This album has my favorite song by RHCP, the high octane funk-meets-new wave of "Parallel Universe". The only differences between this and Blood Sugar Sex Magik (as this album is often compared to) is that this album contains a slight bit more pop, Frusciante's guitar is a bit more raw, and Flea's bass has a bit more distortion in the funk sense (which is not bad at all) and if you listen to it carefully it might remind some of how Flea played bass on RHCP's 1985 Freaky Styley, but that's just me.

Anthony Kiedis's vocals are very impressive, especially on "Parallel Universe", "Emit Remmus" (or Summer Time spelt backwards), "This Velvet Glove", "Easily", and the singles "Otherside", "Californication", "Scar Tissue", and "Road Trippin'". Chad Smith's drum work is very nifty and over all the band chemistry is great.

Going back to the funk, they are still just as funky as ever, and as I said before the bass reminded me of Freaky Styley, especially on "Around The World", "I Like Dirt", and "Purple Stain". "Get On Top" slightly takes you back to the days of Mother's Milk from 1989.

However, there is songs on here that could have used some improvement. "Porcelain" is just way too slow, though I do admit, the vocals were pretty good.

Nonetheless, the album is spectacular, I love it, it's great, you should get this.

Free Music Review: Smart, Touching, Cruel, and Honest
Hit: 5 Stars

A blend of everything that is American music comes together in the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As the millenium closed and rock was dying, out came Scar Tissue. Spewing blood and past memories on the floor, a group of former heroin-junkies released a tired salsa-flavored pop-rock tune. At first scoffed at, it caught on to symbolize something much more than the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It symbolized an America that was looking over its shoulder scared and running from something.

Even though America looked back with Scar Tissue, it gave the Peppers hope. The album that wasn't supposed to sell started to sell. The ... Red Hot Chili Peppers had written an album's worth of morose twisted tales with equally enchanting, and beautiful drumming, basslines, and guitar work.

Anthony Kiedis deserves props for the lyric sheet to Scar Tissue alone. Added onto that "Other Side" and "Californication" and Kiedis became the poet laurette for rock music in 1999.... On this album though, [Guitarist Jon Frusciante] takes it one step further. He becomes a certifiable rock God, that all guitarists should look to to copy.

Flea is just the best bassist out there. Only Sting and Paul McCartney have had a bigger impact on modern music using the bass.

The drummer Chad Smith deserves props because he never had an ... addiction and stuck with the three above nutcases. He also is just a bruising, great drummer.

This CD is a river of nightmares, but also of dreams, it is ultimately the Chili Peppers exorcism into the new millenium. A fitting end and a great beginning.

i will say that this is a album for the diehard pepper fans.i know alot of people buying it for scar tissue and hating the rest of it cause it's too mellow.many have wondered why the peppers are so mellow on this album.all you have to do it look at their past problems and what has happened in their lives to understand why this album is full of so much emotion.they have not sold out either.i can't understand why people say that now when you would think they would have said it in 91 when they signed with warner bros.,in 92 when under the bridge was at the top of the charts or even way back in 89-90 when mother's milk outsold all their other albums and had mini-hits on mtv with knock me down and higher ground.the peppers will never sell out to anything.they are playing/making the type of music they like.as for the new tunes they are great!!!!you have the funk:around the world(2nd single),i like dirt, get on top, right on time, and one of their best, purple stain.you also have songs with alot of emotion and beauty:scar tissue, porcelain, otherside, road trippin' and easily(my fav. song on the album) and hard rockers like emit remmus, and parallel universe and other great little tunes like californication(simply amazing),this velvet glove(has a nice little groove to it) and savior(i think it would be a masterpiece if it were about 4 minutes longer)the only thing i find wrong with this is that they didn't add gong li on there(if you haven't heard the song yet well it's really beautiful-it can be found on the scar tissue single)the peppers have made yet another great album!!!!-jason harshman
