Stadium Arcadium-Red Hot Chili Peppers *****
To begin words cant even attempt to explain how amazing this album is. Stadium Arcadium is without a doubt the best Red Hot Chili Peppers album ever. I had this album for a week before it was released because of a record shop owner I know so I have had time to digest it. I heard rumors that this was not going to be very good and just another album but it is so much more. With every listen I grow founder of the album. 28 tracks and not a single bad one, what are the chances of that? This maybe the very best double album ever, yes better then Physical Graffiti, The White Album, well maybe London Calling is better. The band really worked hard on this record and it shows. Anthony Keidis' lyrics, vocals and performance is just brilliant. Chad Smith's drumming is maybe the best it has ever been. Flea is playing the best he has in almost 15 years. John Frushanti is at an all time best here I am simply blown away by how this man gets better with every album and his performance here is that of legend. He said his inspirations for the album were Jimi Hendrix which you can clearly hear and finding faith which is cool itself.
Disc one is clearly the better disc not to say two is bad it's just this side is even more amazing. The album opens up with `Dani California' which in my honest opinion is one of the very best songs the band has ever made. The lyrics are becoming an all time favorite and the guitar solo is so simple and yet one of the coolest I think I have ever heard. `Snow (Hey Oh)' is a great song with a nice melody and a killer guitar riff. To me the first two songs here the two best they really set the pace for the rest of the album. The title track `Stadium Arcadium' `Especially In Michigan' `Slow Chetah' `Warlocks' and `Charlie' are the stand out tracks on the first disc but all of the songs are good and are unique and really make this an interesting album that I don't think will ever get old.
Disc two is slightly more mellow but still very good. A few instances moments balance this side of the album perfectly. This side opens with `Desecration Smile' which is slower and really sets the pace for the rest of this disc. Once again the musicianship is amazing and so are the lyrics and the over all performance. And once again all the songs are amazing but `If' `Animal Bar' `21st Century' `Hard To Concentrate' `Storm In A Teacup' and `Tell Me Baby' are the stand out tracks.
Stadium Arcadium is really and album unlike any I have ever heard. I have never heard an album so clear where everything flows so perfectly with no bumps in the road. Unlike other albums where the band has followed a specific pattern or theme this one does not. Where By The Way was more laid back, BloodSugarSexMagik was more intense, and Mothers Milk was more funky this is an album that blends everything everyone loves about Red Hot Chili Peppers into one album. Easily going to be a classic and one I will recommend to anyone anywhere. Truly a masterpiece and easily the best album to come along in many, many years. Can't wait for the tour.
Free Music Review: A very inspired and honest record Hit: 5 Stars
Like anyone at this point, I only got an initial impression of the record, albeit a strong one, since I gave it my full attention and listened on a good sound system, in a silent environment. To sum it up, it's a very well-writen, artistic, and enjoyable album.
It's a surprise. The more you know and have followed the band through its previous records, the more you'll be surprised at the level of songwriting they have reached (think Beatles-level). Originality (or the -successful- pursuing of it) is a constant. Where it isn't completely original, it is a stellar interpretation of existing structures.
It's an achievement. There is no price to be paid for all this creativity: it never sounds idiotic, pretentious, or aggressive - but free and humble. Even the most daring propositions (like Animal Bar) sound pleasing. Rick (the producer) and the recording guys are to be taken credit for this, alongside the band.
It's funky, in more than one defition. 'The funk is back', for whom it makes sense, is a true affirmation. Flea actually sounds fat for the first time since Blood Sugar Sex Magik (the band's reference funk record), due to a different choice of instrument. On the Mars half, Anthony is heard using his voice in ways that inevitably remind us of that record, and earlier ones. Where the music gets obviously funky, the mix also gets propositally old-school and rough, to further bring us memories of things as remote as 'American Ghost Dance'.
It's strange. I began my experience with the album by reading the lyrics and looking at the artwork. They communicate confusion, uncertainty, chaos. Anthony's writing suggests disenchantment with our world, alleviated by cheap pleasures and distractions. He never sounds actually sad like he does on By the Way, but true happiness is equally absent. The whole experience, music added, forms a landscape non-coincidentally reminescent of our real world.
It's a development. Chad today is the same musician as he has been since Californication (his big growth happened much earlier, beginning with One Hot Minute). He's the only estatic one though. Anthony shows a new level of control over his voice, enabling him to deliver the perfect beauty of 'Especially in Michigan'. Flea finally takes (or accepts, or reaches?) the liberty to take that intrincate, spontaneous approach, characteristic of his live jams, to the studio. John keeps the voice layering going, this time flawlessly throughout the record, and masters his guitar into new sounds that rocket-propel the music forwards.
It's too much for a jewel case. In my local Brazilian pressing exemplar, the fat booklet doesn't fit easily into the plastic, resulting in a damaged booklet. The plastic holding the discs also doesn't open smoothly, which caused one of my discs to fall music-side-down to the ground. Today's cases are real bad, this album deserves a better one.
A great album to have that is never going to bother you. A must have for Peppers fans.

[...]
yeahyeah, personally they're just sooooooo easy to hate and I'd never wanna hang out with them, but damn if john, flea and chad aren't getting tighter and tighter with each release..
john returning to the group was the best thing that could have ever happened to them--(remember the dave navarro guitar-ed turd one hot minute?!) and with this his 3rd recorded album since rejoining, (5th overall) the group just really shines.
his playing is just so good! the screamy, stabby f-you of a solo on "torture me", the trademark dry as a saltine funk muting scratch of "hump de bump" and the hendrix ape-ing/tributing of "purple haze" on "dani california", and the machine gun arpegiatting of "snow (hey oh)" and the screaming soaring speeding stuff on "so much i"..I could go on and on.
john is this record's MVP, hands down.
according to a magazine article I read a few years back, supposedly all he does in his spare time [...] is yoga and play guitar. it shows in his playing.
--him and flea work and weave together magically and frusciante's sparse, lean parts give flea and chad plenty of room to fill, which they do like the seasoned vets they are.
chad's drumming is pocket-perfect..and flea? please.
"21st century"?!!???
oh no.
john's guit burns.
but flea is just---bass monster.
yeahyeah--people dig claypool, but michael "flea" balzary wins.
he's my favorite bassist working and age has really broadened his playing. bass isn't what you play but what you DON'T play and flea's understanding of what to play and when and where and how much just gets better and better as years go by.
and it was great to hear the return of his trumpet playing..
anthony's singing is pretty much what you'd expect---but he really jumps (unapologetically) back to the rap/rock/whiteboyfunk/vocalizing of the groups earliest records.
and the rick rubin production just sounds rock.
neil diamond record aside, the guys production is gold and it's no wonder the chili's keep going to him for the knob twiddles. he brings out their best.
musically the album is a lot edgier and funkier than some of their last releases--shades of uplift mofo even. "tell me baby"? funk and slap ala old skool flea, digging alla the old moves from "higher ground" out from the trunkafunk.
volume/content wise, think a tubbier blood sugar, with all of the high's and lows but all working to a greater good.
double albums (especially with the extra time of a cd's) are very hard to pull off (c'mon, how many double non-live studio records do you see these days from non-jam bands??! ) and the rhcp score here.|
I really liked californication and by the way even more but this beats out them both--and that's a tall order for an album spread over 2 discs.
good stuff.
it's worth having.
I like it.
oh and the hamburger pimp from dolemite should claim "readymade" as his new theme....it'd fit.
Free Music Review: Hits the Mark Hit: 5 Stars
Double albums are tricky business. Sometimes they're over-conceptualized - though excellent musically, Pink Floyd's The Wall tries to stick to a common theme and doesn't always succeed. And sometimes they're weighed down with filler - The Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness has way too much top-notch material for one CD but not quite enough for two.
Yet the Red Hot Chili Peppers' new Stadium Arcadium walks the line well. Dividing their material into "Jupiter" and "Mars" discs (which seems to mean nothing in terms of stylistic differences), singer Anthony Kiedis, guitarist John Frusciante and rhythm section Flea and Chad Smith deliver two full hours of carefree pop-rock bliss.
Several of the tracks, including "Charlie," "Hump de Bump," "Tell me Baby" and "Readymade," bring back the harder-edged funk-rap sound of BloodSugarSexMagik. Interestingly, the aggressive verses tend to lead into melodic choruses, giving these songs more variety than traditional funk tunes have.
Other compositions, like first single "Dani California," uber-standout track "Especially in Michigan" and soothing ballad "If," continue Californication and By the Way's excursion into Beatles-influenced upbeat melody. Though these songs occasionally lack the negative energy that popped up from time to time on older material (no one dies on a mountain, gets his throat slit or cuts his wrists "Under the Bridge" on Stadium Arcadium), the lyrics keep away from cheesy territory.
Amazingly, listeners won't be inclined to skip a single track, making Stadium Arcadium one of the most consistent two-CD sets in history. But that's not to say it's perfect.
For one, there are a lot of laid back, melodic songs, each with its own melody and guitar riffs. Unfortunately, because the record is so long and leans so heavily in this direction, many of the tracks sound alike for the first few listens. Fans could avoid this pitfall by only listening to one CD until it becomes familiar.
Also, though many of the lyrics are insightful or at least comprehensible, oftentimes they're little more than gibberish. In "Charlie," for example, Kiedis belts out, "Everybody do the twist / Get the message on Flea's fist / Move around like a scientist / Lay down, get kissed."
Then, in "Storm in a Teacup," there's "You try to be a lady / But you're walkin' like a sour kraut [sic]." Google informs us "kraut" can be a derogatory term for a German person, but maybe it's a typo and Kiedis really is accusing a woman of moving like cabbage.
While a bit much to handle at once, the 28 songs on Stadium Arcadium are catchy, well written and worth repeated listens. They continue a trend: Since the 1999 comeback Californication, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have pleasantly surprised listeners with each release. At this rate, they'll soon be worthy of the "classic rock" moniker.
