Free Music Review: Just in case you slept on it...

... or in case you weren't a music consumer back then and are reading this simply out of curiosity, this piece of Canadian modern soul (or "neo soul", to use the popular term) from 2001 is definitely worth checking out while stocks last. "Blue-eyed soul" was how someone I used to know referred to it once - a reference that made me wince. Assuming the man's eyes ARE indeed blue, I really don't see what their colour (or the colour of his skin, for that matter) has to do with anything.
Clearly influenced by people like D'Angelo and Maxwell - I even hear traces of Marvin Gaye - the real phenomenon about this project is that Shand plays practically every instrument on it himself, including alto and tenor saxophones, and he plays them incredibly well. The one exception is "i met your mercy", on which Ken Gold played tenor and baritone saxophones. Shand also wrote and produced the album in its entirety and in my book, he deserves a couple of stars for that feat alone.
Luckily, the music on offer here is actually top quality. Shand's voice however - sometimes natural, sometimes falsetto - while pleasant, does seem to lack real bite. On balance though, at least musically, this album is as near flawless as it gets. Its Achilles heel, as far as I'm concerned is in its lyrics. Lacking solid lyrical hooks to hang the consciousness on, the bulk of the songs fail to make a real impression and are instantly forgettable. There are a few exceptions of course and "the way i feel", "take a message" and the burning ballad that is "i met your mercy" all stand out, as does the jazzy, semi-instrumental "the mind's eye", which is also rather cool and one of my favourite tunes on here.
I actually got the European "Special Edition" of this album and it features two bonus tracks; "mai", another instrumental that showcases Shand jamming on the organ, and a vocal track, "ripened & consumed". They don't really bring any added value to the proceedings in my opinion though, so I wouldn't advocate going out of one's way to lay hands on a copy. This version right here is just fine.
The Way I Feel Poster
Winnipeg, Manitoba, is a very cold place. Perhaps Remy Shand's debut, recorded in his Winnipeg bedroom, is his effort to cozify the Canadian city. It's a warm slice of the vintage soul that's been popularized by artists like D'Angelo and Maxwell, replete with shimmering musical touches--a clavinet here, a Rhodes there. Shand's falsetto often mimics, and at times evokes, soul legends, though his sometimes skinny delivery lacks both the pelvic thrust and the world-on-my-shoulders weight of the genre's finest. Songs like "Take a Message" are winsome, if wispy, in their romantic sentiments. "Rocksteady" features lovely instrumentation punctuating Shand's vocals, while the heftier "Liberate" finds him rebelling against an unnamed enemy (the Mounties?).
