Free Music Review: beautiful, lush--and an astonishing accomplishment for such a young lady

Renee Olstead's album entitled Skylark showcases her beautiful voice and her ability to sing like a seasoned professional with experience well beyond her years. Renee has a bright future ahead of her; she never falters with these sophisticated ballads because her talent is completely natural. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is lovely.
"Midnight Man" starts the CD off with a jazzy, bouncy melody that features Renee squarely front and center. There's a backup chorus but it only enhances the number; they never steal the spotlight from Renee. Renee doesn't require any backup but they do sound pretty good as they harmonize to perfection! "Stars Fell On Alabama" uses some great effects to make Renee's voice seem further away just a bit; and the entire ballad holds its own very well. Renee never sings a superfluous note. Her excellent diction bolsters her performance even more; and listen for "My Baby Just Cares For Me." "My Baby Just Cares For Me" again employs a very jazzy arrangement with some mighty fine brass and percussion. The music fits in perfectly with Renee's vocals and she delivers this like a pro!
"When I Fall In Love" has Renee joined by Chris Botti to make this a memorable number; Renee's voice makes this timeless ballad sound fresh, new and terrific. What a pair to perform "When I Fall In Love!" "When I Fall In Love" sports a very lush musical arrangement as well. "Thanks For The Boogie Ride" indeed has a swing/boogie type of musical arrangement and when Renee sings this she does great justice to this tune! Renee was born to sing songs like this.
"Skylark" is, of course, the title track for this album; and the arrangement is particularly pleasing to the ear. Renee never skips a beat and "Skylark" is clearly a major highlight of this album. Listen also for a rousing rendition of "Hit The Road Jack;" Renee and some backup singers infuse this with so much energy--Ray Charles would tip his hat to salute Renee and her interpretation of "Hit The Road Jack." "Hit The Road Jack" is one of my very favorite songs on this album; and the arrangement is very creative.
"You've Changed" is a number by Bill Carey and Carl Fischer that has been performed by such greats as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Renee sings "You've Changed" very much like the greatest of songbirds; and the piano arrangement is very elegant. What a moving ballad! "Ain't We Got Fun" is a song from the early 1920s but it comes out sounding as fresh as the first time anybody ever heard it! I love that backup chorus, too. The CD ends with Renee Olstead performing "Nothing But The Blame;" "Nothing But The Blame" gets the royal treatment from Renee and the slow tempo is very pretty. "Nothing But The Blame" makes a fine ending for this album.
If you think that Renee is at the top of her game, just remember the fact that she's really just begun. It's astonishingly rare that such a young person can compete with the best of the best--but Renee can compete and she does it up right! Obviously, this young songbird will succeed at doing anything she wants to do. Renee's fans will want this for their collections; and I predict that we will get much, much more incredible performances from Renee over the decades to come. She has quite a gift!
