Free Music Notes for Rent (1996 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: Astounding Hit: 5 Stars
I have been involved in theatre since I was 9, and this recording is truly one of the most extraordinary I have ever heard. It combines thoughts, feelings, and emotions that most of us try and hide with people we probably feel as though we already know in our own lives. The music is gorgeous straight through from beginning to end, and the lyrics are inventive, tragic, and very often moving. If I had one cast album for the rest of my life, this would be it. Please join myself all the other fans of RENT (Self proclaimed Rentheads) in applauding Jonathan Larson, who was gone before he could see his vision and his passion reach more people than anyone ever dreamed possible. RENT ignites a feeling of being one unit with the rest of society, it makes you feel as if your voice is being heard, because as you listen to the songs, you realize that what the actors are saying is what you have been saying all along. Buy it today. You won't be sorry. And remember: "The opposite of war isn't peace...it's creation."
Free Music Review: Wonderful Hit: 5 Stars
I have noticed several individuals writing reviews on this play, claiming they thought the music was good, but they know better because they are more experienced in the music business, and know that it isn't really "good" music. Well, what is the point of music in the first place? Is it not to reach out and touch the common people? What good is music if it may have a lot of technical merit, but it never really speaks to anybody? The point of this music is to send a message, and it does it very well. It doesn't matter if the music is very challenging or not, most people believe this music to be beautiful, and it spoke to them. That is what is important. This musical touches on some taboo subjects in our society, subjects which shouldn't be taboo. I think this musical is important, in that it has a good message, and great songs. The characters are people who can be related to, or people that you should be able to relate to. This musical is original, and a wonderful listen! I love it.
Free Music Review: RENT is THE must-have CD for theater buffs Hit: 5 Stars
Rent launched the careers of Daphne Rubin Vega, Anthony Rapp, Taye Diggs, and (perhaps most popularly) Jesse L. Martin, of Law & Order fame. Sure he's a tough cop, but when you hear him sing "I'll Cover You" you realize exactly why it is that so many actors and actresses say their first love is the theater. Martin is so much more than some cog in Dick Wolf's Law and Order machine. He has a voice that can bowl you over.
The movie didn't bowl audiences over. (We won't blame that on the replacement of Vega with Rosario Dawson *cough* Idiots! *cough*) Seasons of Love, and Stevie Wonder, how can you go wrong there?
Especially when one takes the time to read the story of Jonathan Larson, as told by brilliant writer David Lipsky. "525,600 minutes--how do you measure a year in the life?" Larson was a man so in love with his craft that he basically worked himself to death in order to leave the world this beautiful, amazing legacy of song, of love, of heart. It is a MUST-HAVE CD!
Free Music Review: Forget regret or life is yours to miss Hit: 5 Stars
I live in a small town, and I have missed much of life. I read about the real world in books and watch what I can in my passion for movies. And I also love musical theater, all kinds. So my voice teacher mentioned going to see RENT and I was interested in hearing a rock musical, so I downloaded "Another Day" "One song glory" and "Seasons of Love" which are three of my favorites today. So, I immediatley went out and ordered the CD, and I have only listened to it 6 times but I love it more each time. It helps me see what the world is really like. And since Broadway is my dream, I have no shame in playing the fame game, and it gives me inspiration. Lights my candle, you could say. Enough cheesy lines from songs to describe my review. RENT is amazing. Download the songs from wherever you can and just listen to this beautiful look at real life. I only wish the creator had been able to see his work of art come to life. But RENT will live on without him. No day but today.
Free Music Review: No Day Like Today... Hit: 5 Stars
Jonathan Larson is one of those rare individuals who reaped the benefits of his short life by bringing to fruition his dreams in the form of "Rent" As most aficianadoes of this musical know, Larson updates Puccini's "La Boheme" (starving artists, ill-fated love) and sets it in modern day New York, only AIDS has taken the place of consumption and life and love have decidedly different roles. Much more than a rock opera, "Rent" has soul and backbone- a tangible and fleshed-out story, as much as the characters. Such numbers as "Glory", "Life Support", "Will I", and the identifiable "Seasons of Love" achingly portray the fight against despair. Celebratory selections such as "Take Me Out Tonight", "Today 4 U", "La Vie Boheme" and "I'll Cover You" depict the undying spirit of these artists. Practically the definitive musical of life in the "Gay" 90s to ever come off of Broadway
