Free Music Review: Most Defining Theatric Event Since Les Miz
Hit: 5 Stars

One St. Paddy's day a year ago I ventured into the Big Apple looking forward to an exciting with my best friend and his mother. Little did I know that my life would be drastically effected later that evening. That night we bought second row seats at the Nerlander Theater to see "Rent". I knew little about this rock opera the day I went to see it. Immediately I was startled and surprised by the vibrant energy emitted by the performers. The first song I recollect hearing is "One Song Glory", an opus similar to that of Keats' "To Autumn" but supplimenting tuberclulosis for AIDS. I must mind you that I am a preppy Irish Catholic boy from an affluent suburban town, so I had little history with the topics of AIDS, homosexuality, and homelessness that are brought up in "I Should Tell You", "I'll Cover You", and "On The Street". Songs such as "La Vie Boheme" display the erratic mind of Johnathan Larson, along with the tearjerkers such as "Goodbye Love", where Mimi, who has AIDS, is saying goodbye to her former lover before she passes. What is most interesting about "Rent" is the irony that surrounds it. In "Life Support" Johnathan Larson pleads "Forgret regret, for life is yours to miss". You might or might not know that Johnathan died of an anueresym that night prior to the premier of "Rent". So, please see this remarkable play that will inspire you to look at life as "No day but today" and to ponder "How do we measure the life of a woman or a man?"

Free Music Review: A Life-Changing Musical
Hit: 5 Stars

Rent is an experience that only gets better with familiarity. It's one of those CDs that you leave in your car's CD player, listening & singing to it wherever you go. Rent has taken over my life; I have a personal celebration on Dec. 24th 9pm EST, and my answering machine says "SPEAK."

I am one of those fans who've heard the soundtrack before seeing Rent live. I was instantly attracted by some of the more popular, "memorizable" songs (ie. Light My Candle, One Song, & Seasons of Love). Disc One is definitely the more catchy of the two discs. However, after listening to the CD for two years, I've fallen in love with the decidedly more complex and interesting 2nd Disc. The mournful "Halloween" and "Cover You Reprise" both pour out despair in soft, touching reflections. Anthony Rapp is my personal favorite voice in Rent, for his unique, emotional voice, and his timing and chemistry when doing duets.

The quality of recording is mostly superb, although the instruments' sound often lacks low-end depth (presumably to keep the voices prominent). There is also some minor recording distortion on some vocal tracks (Somewhat noticable at the start of "Cover You reprise" when listened to on decent speakers, which is unfortunate because his voice is so incredible.)

All in all, this is a definite recommendation. Sit down and listen to the entire soundtrack once, and you'll be hooked. Which, in fact, may be it's one weakness: once these songs are stuck in your head, they will remain there for a LONG time.

Free Music Review: No Day But Today!
Hit: 5 Stars

Listening to the 'Rent' cd, I can really feel all the emotions tied into each and every song because they were all written from the heart of one truly great man. JONATHAN LARSON. The song, 'Rent', my favorite, sucks you in right from the beginning with it's wild guitar riffs and experiences with life from alot of the characters. 'Glory' is really emotional--it's sung by Roger, who is a musician but hasn't worked since his girlfriend "April left a note saying 'We've got AIDS' before slitting her wrists in the bathroom." The song is a quest by Roger to find the "one song" to redeem his "empty life" because he's scared that he's going to die before he does anything worthwhile. "Light My Candle" is a song that sparks a little romance between Roger and Mimi. Both lonely and without someone, the start a connection here. "Over the Moon" is a funny song, but not really that great on cd because it's a song all about motions and symbols. Without being able to see the character portray the movements, the song gets lost and doesn't really do anything for you. 'Seasons of Love' is a great song about life and it is represented by the entire ensemble. I believe this cd would definately be a wise choice because the lyrics are all emotions, all the time. Plus, it features an all-star cast: Anthony Rapp (Movies: Dazed and Confused, Adventures in Babysitting), Taye Diggs (How Stella Got Her Groove Back), and Jesse L. Martin (tv's Ally McBeal) FIVE+++ stars!

Free Music Review: Wow!
Hit: 5 Stars

That's pretty much all I can say...Wow! RENT is amazing. I am not saying this only from the point of view of a die-hard "RENThead" (as fans are called), but from the point of view of a person who has grown up in suburban Connecticut. RENT really is a musical for today's world. Featuring such previous taboos as AIDS, homosexuality, and drug abuse, RENT really speaks to today's youth. The highlights of the show include "RENT", "One Song Glory", "Out Tonight", "Another Day", "La Vie Boheme", "Take me or Leave Me","Without You", and "I'll Cover You: Reprise", all of which are beautiful songs whose subjects range from the funeral of a dead transvestite to a dying young man's wishes to a celebration of Bohemian life. The strongest vocals on this recording are those of Anthony Rapp (Mark), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Mimi), Idina Menzel (Maureen), and Wilson Jermaine Heredia (Angel), and the other cast members have incredible voices. The CD, however, is not perfect. The version of the hit song "Seasons of Love", featuring Stevie Wonder, is a poor example of what RENT can be. "I'll Cover You", the love duet between Collins and Angel, is very much like a modern bubble-gum pop song, with lyrics such as "So with a thousand sweet kisses - when you're cold and you're lonely - I'll cover you...". But, even with a few faults, the RENT original cast recording is a great buy and it is well worth the money!
