Free Music Notes for Rent (1996 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: A Truly Unique Broadway Classic Hit: 5 Stars
Wow...all I have to say is wow. Rent is an unbelievable musical/opera/concert masterpiece. The songs are extremely sentimental and exciting, plus each and every part of the story contains an excessive amount of energy!! I haven't seen the show before, but listening to this recording is almost like being there and watching this amazing story being brought to life.
It is no doubt that the material is for a more mature audience, but if you are old enough, you will appreciate it's modern, artistic, and extremely theatrical approach to Puccini's "La Boheme." The songs are very catchy, and provides a unique understanding to the issues of these New York artists. I can't even pick a favorite song!! One Song Glory is phenomenal and gives powerful feeling when you listen to it. Seasons of Love is
a beautiful piece of musical work, which pretty much sums the play up in 4 minutes. The rest are very operatic, filling you in on the plot and the feelings of the characters.
I could say more, but I think it is impossible to explain this amazing work to people who haven't listened to it. Definetely get it, so then you'll understand!! It is so unique and pleasing to anybody who enjoys a great story and Broadway music with a rock twist.

Free Music Review: No Day But Today... Hit: 5 Stars
RENT is an amazing musical. It's music is brand new and daring. The lyrics are amazingly powerful if not a bit racy. The music spans over many different music types; appealing to the most variety of music tastes. But the music is just part of the whole thing that turns me onto this musical. It's the lyrics, the story, and the whole theme. The characters are wonderful in that they show such powerful emotion and have such a lust for life. I just love RENT! RENT is about the uconventional lives of young bohemians in an East Village industrial loft in New York. It also, as you have probably already read in other reviews, that RENT also deals with the horrible but real life situations like AIDS and all of that stuff. Now to the music...it's simply wonderful. Every (song) is awesome! But I don't like the Voice Mails. They can get very annoying very fast. I just wish they wouldn't have sung those...they would have sounded a lot better in the spoken form. But I must say that the overall CDs deserve 100 stars +! But you can't overlook the whole point. (And I'll let you discover that for yourself!) But I must say that you will love the point, as well as everything else. Extrememely highly recommended! The extra money is definetely worth it! Enjoy!

This album is undescribabel.I feel like I know these characters well.I saw the show on June 5,2001.Now I cant stop the emoition that comes over me in the finale ,one song glory, without you,I'll cover you (reprise).I bought the album with the remainder of my confirmation money. At first I thought ok should I really listen to this .I think it helped after seeing the show on stage. It changed my life, I came out of that theater as a diffrent person.I started mending relationships with classmates, family, freinds etc.etc.If this show never existed I would still be wondering who am I?The songs are brilliant and amazing all the way first to last.Favorites are rent, one song glory, light my candle, today 4 u, tango:maureen, life support, out tonight, another day, will I,santa fe,I'll cover you ,were okay, christmas bells, over the moon ,la vie boheme,I should tell you,la vie boheme(2),seasons of love, happy new year, take me or leave me,without you, contact, and all the others on the cd.I simply cant believe some of the mis-interpetations of this show. One girl said oh yah i saw that it was just about gay people.I almost slapped her but instead I thought about the message of the show NO DAY BUT TODAY.For anyone who likes les mis..., A Chorus Line,Pippin, and Hair this is definitley for you.
Free Music Review: A monumental achievment Hit: 5 Stars
When Rent hit Broadway in 1996, no one new what to make of it. It wasn't a musical in the sense of the word (classical, set in the past). But it took the idea of a musical to a higher level. The death of Jonathan Larson was a truly tragic even for Broadway, and indeed, the world of theatre. Why does it succeed? For several reasons, from the ability for one to hum the songs, identify with at least one of the characters (if not all), and the relevance of the plot (the AIDS epidemic--which was dramatized brilliantly in the plays Angels In America (The Millennium Approaches and Perestroika). The best song on the soundtrack? Well, I cannot choose just one, but here's a rundown on my favourites. 1. La Vie Boheme: Brilliance at it's best. The song is one of the most singable, joyous, and inspirational tune to people who don't accept their biological time bomb. 2. Living in America: Another touch of greatness, with the duet between Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal a touching display of aimlessness in a society of straightforward progress. 3. Seasons of Love: How does one really measure their life? It deserved the Tony, the Pulitzer, and every other award it won. Rent Rocks!
Free Music Review: More Than Another Pop Musical Hit: 5 Stars
I admit I was a bit apprehensive of this at first, as I had not had much luck with "pop" musicals (I cite Starlight Express, specifically its rap song). However, this has to be one of the best scores ever written for one of the best plays ever. In the age of pricey revivals and Andrew Lloyd Weber, of three chord songs and two-dimensional characters and no sub-plots to confuse the lower-than-average audience (Phantom, anyone?), something good was made. It will make you laugh, cry, and marvel at the sheer genius of the score. There are nearly no weak songs, except for "Out Tonight" and a few parts of "Another Day". The closing number will leave you breathless, and the cast is incredible (though Daphne Rubin-Vega's voice sounds straining and doesn't do Jonathan Larson's songs justice, despite her wonderful acting). I would not recommend this to those who couldn't stand Sondheim, though, as this is another one of those plays that tries to actually make a point and show people as what they are. It has homosexuality, death, AIDS, homelessness, poverty, cursing, and drugs, so it's not exactly Brigadoon. However, if you are prepared for the emotional assault of songs like I'll Cover You Reprise and Goodbye Love, then buy it.
