Jameson Thottam - Buy don't rent "Rent"
First Thoughts: Jameson Thottam
When I first heard even a little of the music from this musical, I was appalled. Who dares to take the pure wholesome boringness of the everyday musical and rock it up a bit? Jonathan Larson does.
The Musical in the Making: Jameson Thottam
Rent is a musical a long time in the coming. For a while Broadway music has fallen out of the mainstream. The magic of the Broadway musical was reserved for a select group of avid and persistent fans. Rent, however, exploded across the scene in 1996 with something that was fresh, new, and wonderfully vibrant in the tarnished world of Broadway. Jonathan Larson took a chance with some new faces and a score that was straight from the electric guitar's mouth. It was worth it. Rent has grown to be one of the most popular musicals of our generation. People anywhere can associate with the horrible treatment and repression of the "Bohemians." A musician can struggle with Roger on his quest for one last song. And AIDS patients everywhere will agree with Mimi when she implores that there is "no day but today" to live life to the fullest. This musical not only has music to make your soul quiver, but lyrics that will stay with you far after you forget where they are from.
The Hard Knocks: Jameson Luke Thottam
Okay, now a couple of bad things. There is a lot of language in this musical that earns it a PG-13 viewing rating from me. In fact, some people would say that it depletes from the true message of the musical. But, I believe that the language is necessary to portray the real emotions of the characters. For instance, if someone is locking you out of your apartment building and called the cops because you wanted back in, you are not going to call him a boogerhead and go on. You're going to refer to him as "that fu*&!" and rant and rave a bit. But still, think twice before inviting your seven year old sister in to listen to a CD.
Final Thoughts : Jameson L Thottam
All in all, this musical has something for everyone. It has wonderful singing, great music, a powerful message, and a pure undertone that rips your heart out at the end and brings tears to your eyes. It did to mine.

Free Music Review: Surprisingly... I really enjoy it! Hit: 5 Stars
I will admit that I have been dubious about this project from the start. I am also insanely attached to the original Broadway cast recording. That being said, I was preparing myself to hate this new recording upon first listen.
I am pleasantly surprised. While not without flaws, this soundtrack takes the difficult task of fine tuning a stage show for the film medium, and rises to the occasion.
A good amount of "sung dialogue" has been cut, leaving primairly the major songs. While I'm sure many people miss the dialogue, I think this is a wise choice for the film and bodes well for the success of the movie.
One of the most notable differences (and improvements) is the clarity of diction on this recording. Movie audiences need to understand what is being said, and the cast members manage to get that done without sounding overly pretentious.
The original cast members (Pascal, Diggs, Menzel, Heredia, Rapp, and Martin) have all matured and grown, not only with their voices, but with their acting ability as well. They all have resisted the temptation to make this soundtrack a carbon copy of the original recording, and have made new and usually effective character choices.
The newcomers, Dawson and Thoms, shouldn't be cause for disappointment. While Dawson does not have an especially trained singing voice, she makes a very servicable Mimi. Thoms, on the other hand, blows her competition out of the water, and truly is the person who impressed me the most on this soundtrack.
The new orchestrations are stunning. "Rent" is a pleasure, and "Tango:Maureen" is rendered even more effective with the additional instruments.
The recording of a Jonathan Larson song, "Love Heals" for use over the end credits is especially lovely. Even though the use of this song ensures that Rent cannot get an Oscar nomination for best song, I think those involved would agree that it is best to honor Jonathan in this case.
I love this CD more with each repeated listening. It isn't the Original Broadway cast recording, nor should it be. This is a seperate project, for a new medium, and I beleive they have done a beautiful job with it.
Free Music Review: No DAY But TODAY! Hit: 5 Stars
Wow if the movie wasn't wonderful enough the soundtrack is even greater... on my Christmas wishlist this year is "Rent" the sountrack captures all the beauty you saw in the film and the Broadway version of the show... if doing nothing more than enhancing the beauty of the epic songs. It's a pity Jonathon Larson didn't live to see the beauty of his musical be realized.
With the orginal Broadway cast reprising their roles on the stage- this C.D. lives up to the show that has been running for ten years on Broadway. The music is powered pack with rock meets Broadway style music. Adding new depth to what has become a very dull Broadway genre.
The musical is all about coming to terms with life in the 90s as eight friends have to deal with death, drug addiction, roller coaster romances, AIDS, feelings of inadquesse and that we feeling we all have of wanting "something more" in life. The musical lives up to the rave reviews it has been recieving online and it's a musical that EVERYONE can relate too... I love listening to this C.D. and it's so uplifting and powerful I only wished they had made the musical/sountrack sooner for "Rent" fans.
Each song sticks out with you- My favorites
"One Song Glory"-about wanting to be known for something
"Seasons Of Love"- How you should measure your life
"Will I?"- Those afflicted with AIDs sing left me remembering the health crisis of the 90s when AIDs was virtually fatal- is a song about them coming to terms with their fate and their fears of death.
"What You Own" is a great rock song
and
My favorite "Finale B" which made me toatlly re-examine my life and how I have lived.
With heartfelt and heartbreaking songs everyone will be able to enjoy this CD and if you haven't seen the movie you simply must go see the movie you'll be amazed!
"There is no future... There is no past....
Thank God this moment's not the last!
There's only us. There is only this...
Forget REGRET or your life is yours to MISS.
No other road. No other DAY But Today!"
"Live to love or live to live in fear... No other path, No Other Road- No day BUT Today!"
Free Music Review: La Vie Boheme Hit: 5 Stars
It is pointless to give a soundtrack a bad rating if you knew going in you were not going to like it. If you know going in it is something you did not like on stage, why bother with the new one?
I love this version. OBC will always be the best for the true feel of the show, but this does a good job molding the music into a newer age group. We all have to remember 10 years has passed.
I am very pleased with Tracie and Rosario in the show. They are both big changes, and of the two, I think criticism will fall on Rosario because she is stepping into some big shoes. She pulls off all of her songs very well, the stand out being Out Tonight. It is the only track o nthis soundtrack that I like BETTER than OBC.
My biggest letdown comes from Idina. I am a HUGE HUGE fan of Idina, and was expecting something amazing with Over The Moon, or even Take me or Leave Me, but instead the easy roads were taken. I understand she could not do the same belting in a movie that she did on stage, and that after a show like Wicked, her voice probably needed some rest. She is still 100% amazing, and I actually like the Moo ending of Over The Moon alot!!
Adam and Anthony are still amazing talents, and for the first time ever I actually enjoyed What You Own.. and that says alot. I had never really heard much from/ about these two before listening to the OBC, but they are so talented that the songs are that much better.
I'll Cover You was done very well by Jesse and Wilson, and of all of the couples in this movie, I am most excited to see how Collins and Angel translate on screen. I was upset that Jesse compromised his voice in the Reprise of I'll Cover You, and went softer instead of sticking to the hardcore from his cut love song he made on the OBC... but again it has been 10 years.
This show is amazing, this soundtrack is amazing, but the thing to do, like so many have said, is not to compair the 2... Movie and Stage are nothing alike, and the harder edges have to the smoothed a little so that a mainstream audience can enjoy it. I am so ready for November 23, I can hardly stand it.
5/5
Free Music Review: Nothing will ever measure up to Larson's original stage score, but... Hit: 5 Stars
I agree with almos everything that's been said thus far. It is a great soundtrack, great's an understatement...let's just say it I was shockerd at how much I loved it, but I do want to worn people not to expect RENT as you've known it. Honestly, the only way that I dealt with my dissapointment of things they changed or just plain cut was by not comparing it to the original score. If you can go in with no expectations and not comparing it to the RENT we all know and love, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Speaking of surprise, I'm happy to say I was VERY surprised by how much I liked Rosario Dawson. Someone else made the point that the movie's yet to be seen, which is true, but just from a vocal standpoint I thought she hit everything just right. I do think a lot of credit needs to go to Rob Cavallo as well. The whole soundtrack is mixed perfectly (sometimes a little too perfectly for me...but that's neither here nor there), and while the cast is clearly insanely talented, vocvally and otherwise, his ear certainly wasn't bad for any of their performances.
The only problem I have with what other people have said is this kind of luke warm-ness about Idina Menzel and Over the Moon. I couldn't disagree more. That was my favorite track from the whole soundtrack. Yes, it's different...very different, and because shes not a new cast member, and everyone's heard the way she performed this song 9 (almost 10) years ago, it makes sense that such a drastic change would turn people off. But I don't think she's bored, "lost it", or weak at ll, she's creating a different character with different choices. Also, that is the only song that was recorded live on the set while filming. Not in the studio, and not with all her energy focused on her singing. It's the only song in this movie that won't have the cast lipsynching what they already recorded, and I love the song for having that extra piece of authenticity and stage-quality that no other song will have. I dunno, maybe I'm way off, but for people who haven't heard the soundtrack yet, give Over the Moon a listen and see what you think, cause I think it's spectacular!
