Free Music Notes for Rent (2005 Movie Soundtrack)

Free Music Review: "Cause everything is RENT"
Hit: 5 Stars

This is without any shadow of a doubt, the best 'Broadway show turned movie' soundtrack ever. The music has been infused with a hard hitting rock edge to it and the arrangements are top notch. The cast is even better and suits their roles more correctly than in the OBC recording. A lot of people are saying the Adam Pascal's vocals aren't as good as the OBC recording, but you have to think that they are taking a slight different direction with the character of Roger. In the OBC recording, Roger has aids but his vocals are POWERFUL and though he is depressed and sad it doesn't really show. Really the only e-motion that shows in the original is that he is contantly angry. In the Movie soundtrack, he has a variety of emotions and you can tell by his vocals that he is a sick man just trying to hang on to something.

Rosario Dawson sounds like more of a 19 year old with insecurities and slowly dying throughout the soundtrack than Daphne Ruben Vega did. She was powerful until "Finale B" while with Dawson's vocals, you can tell that she is getting sicker and sicker and the soundtrack progresses. I love her performance and am enthused that she was the one that was picked for the movie.

Anthony Rapp is and always be the BEST MARK EVER!!!! No one has ever caputred his brillance since he left the show and I am so glad he was chosen to reprise the roll in the movie. Same with Angel. No one does it better than this man and I think he is even greater in the movie than the OBCR. Angel and Mark are my two favorite characters and no one could have done these roles justice but these two men. Everyone else is exceptional in their roles.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE experience this soundtack because you will be AMAZED and then go and see the movie which is destined to be one of the greatest movie muscials to date.

Free Music Review: Superior to the Original
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not just a casual fan of Rent -- I've seen the Broadway show, I've heard the original cast recording, and I know a bit about each of the original cast members. But I must part ways with most of the fans of the stage show by saying that yes, the movie's cast recording is indeed superior.

Three reasons:

1) Polish
Another reviewer noted that "it feels like a layer of grime" has been removed from the original cast recording with this new one, and I'm inclined to agree. The production quality of 1996 simply cannot compare to that of 2005. To me, this is a pro, not a con -- some may prefer the original, more raw sound, but for my tastes, a polished recording simply works better -- the blend of the voices, the balance of the instrumentals with the voices, etc.

2) Rosario Dawson
No matter how much I listen to Daphne Rubin-Vega, I'll never prefer her Mimi to Rosario Dawson's. Rubin-Vega has a raspy, middle-aged sounding voice that simply doesn't work for a New York City bohemian on a soundtrack -- her voice was just meant to be heard live. Rosario Dawson plays a more naive Mimi, with a smoother voice, more youthful, yet still edgy. She uses no vibratto, which I liked more over time. She has an absolutely fantastic pop voice, and look forward to hearing more material from her.

3) The voices have matured.
Especially evident in Adam Pascal and Idina Menzel -- they have more control over the sounds of their voices and they've come into full bloom. Ten years of stage experience will do that for you. The new "Take Me Or Leave Me" absolutely *kills* the original recording.

"Rent"'s full potential seems to have been reached on this recording.

Oh, and also...

4) "Contact" is gone.
I hate that stupid song.

Free Music Review: Love Heals.
Hit: 5 Stars

Gonna make a RENT movie? How do you go about it? Well first you realize that RENTheads are RABID people and if you even think about casting pop stars or anyone but the original cast you're gonna have a flop on your hand and a lot of angry people shouting at you from every direction. So the very smart (who knew) Christopher Columbus demanded he get the original broadway cast and he did just that, take away the unavaible two.
I thought about not buying the cds until after I saw the movie but I'm really glad I did because now I have time to get over the small changes they made for the movie so I don't have to spend my time in the theatre going "whoa! That doesn't go there! Where's this line? He doesn't sing that line!"...i'm over it.
So blah blah blah, the changes are minor the production is slicker and has more of an edge to it. I FINALLY like "One Song Glory", they really rocked this song out and I'm glad they did because the song never did anything for me before. Everyone is in good voice, the new song is fine but nothing amazing, etc. etc. let's get to the point:

Rosario Dawson. She has the nerveracking job of replacing (and being compared to) the brilliant and unmatchable Daphne Rubin-Vega. There's just no way, hands down that she can top that performance vocally, Daphne is Mimi. But to my surprise Rosario's performance on the cd definitely makes its mark and she holds her own. I don't forget Daphne and I often find myself going back to the OBC to listen to the other version but I really like some of the nuances in Rosario's voice, they are very subtle, she has a tiny quiver in her voice at times--her version of Daphne's spine-tingling vocal break. So yes, she will do just fine and I applaud her.
Anyway, great soundtrack, great score, can't wait for the movie.

Free Music Review: An improvement!
Hit: 5 Stars

I've listened to both the Original Broadway Cast Recording and this new soundtrack, and I have to admit... I actually like the soundtrack better. The orchestrations are an improvement, the vocals have more raw emotion rather than empty singing. Every single original cast member has improved for the better in one way or another, and it convinces me to hold high expectations for the film come November 23rd.

To all of those who have heard the OBCR first, please listen with an open mind. It IS different from the original recording. Many are tempted to dislike it at first simply for the principle that it sounds SO different from what they're used to. This is a rocked-out, less broadwayified version of the musical we all know and love, and I believe this is a great move for a film--especially for one that plans to break into the mainstream. :-)

Anthony Rapp sounds terrified. Adam Pascal, in my opinion, sounds like... himself. Different than the OBCR, but if you know his solo work, then you know what to expect. I think he has certainly matured as an actor, and I love his voice. I don't think he's weak at all. Idina Menzel sounds a little spacy, but I think her role calls for it. :-) Jesse L. Martin, Tracie Thoms, and Wilson Jermaine Heredia sound FANTASTIC. And finally, Rosario Dawson--definitely a change from the original Daphne Rubin-Vega, but her smooth voice is perfect for film.

Overall, this soundtrack is an incredible listen. La Vie Boheme, Will I?, One Song Glory, Light My Candle, Another Day, and Tango: Maureen are of particular notice. Love Heals is a lovely little close to the package. All those who were hesitant to buy this, don't hold back! :-)

Free Music Review: What a 10 year celebration
Hit: 5 Stars

From the onset, most traditional 'Rentheads' were probably concerned with the idea of a movie version of our beloved musical, Rent. As a purest and one of the biggest critics of the show (I have seen it more times than average), I am thoroughly impressed with the movie soundtrack. I think that each of the 6 original cast members have matured with their voices and bring to light a more 'reality' to their performances. Let's not forget that Rent celebrates life and they've an additional 10 years of living and life experience acting, singing and whatever they did in that interim.

For the purest, this album might not meet your expectations, however, for the person that accepts change and growth, this album is phenomenal. For the additions to the cast, I am most impressed with Rosario Dawson (Mimi Marquez) and Tracy Thomas's (Joanne Jefferson) performances and are naturals to the roles. Dawson captures an innocence to Mimi that Ruben-Vega (original Mimi) accomplished, to some extent; The simplicity in her performance holds very well with the track, "Without You." Thomas's performance in "Take me or Leave me" is breath-taking; she's brilliant.

As a whole the original six members have matured in voices and bring 10 years of experience back to the roles they created!!! Think about how this must have been for them...all having worked with Jonathon Larson. i cant imagine it being anything more than brilliant.

Give it a chance. The CD is obviously missing tracks that I am sure are in the movie and were reformatted to be a movie. I am excited. I completely recommend this soundtrack to anyone and everyone that has ever loved Rent!
