Free Music Notes for Rent (2005 Movie Soundtrack)Free Music Review: This made me become a RENT Addict! Hit: 5 Stars
Rent is definitely one of the finest musicals of our time. I strongly suggest seeing the movie and buying the movie soundtrack.
For those of you familiar with the original cast recordings, much if it has been trimmed. Many things that were sung in the original cast recordings have are simply spoken dialouge in the movie. You don't really miss much.
But another thing that might please many Rent fanatics is that the movie has 6 out of the 8 original cast members. The characters of Mimi and Joanne are played by Rosario Dawson (Mimi) and Tracie Thomas (Joanne). These actresses do a fine job in filling those shoes. I won't say that they are both better than the original cast members, but they are excellent and perfect for mainstream musical cinema. Rosario Dawson's voice is more earthy and less raspy than Daphne Rubin-Vega's, and Tracie Thomas basically is a clone of Fredi Walker in terms of singing. So this is a really good deal.
Also, the actors playing "Benny" (Taye Diggs) and "Collins" (Jesse L. Martin) have definitely improved their singing over the years. Diggs' voice is less bratty and Jesse's voice definitely adds a tone of wisdom and maturity to the character of Collins.
I strongly suggest the movie to any fan of Rent, and even non-fans of the musical. If you've never heard of or seen the musical at all, then I DEFINITELY suggest the movie!
Free Music Review: The music will captivate you Hit: 5 Stars
Even though I have the CD, whenever I'm flipping channels and I come across the movie "Rent", no matter how many times I've seen it and regardless of what point the movie is at, it is like I am mesmerized, and I know from experience that I am going nowhere until the movie is over. My husband feels the same way and we've both discussed why this is. The answer is the music. It actually pulls us both along through the movie. Just as one great song ends, another begins, and we can't pull ourselves away until the movie - and thus the music - ends. There actually isn't a tedious, boring, or even mediocre piece in the whole musical. Every song has a style different from all of the others and each is quite powerful. The music is not the meat on the bones in this movie version of the Broadway musical, it is actually the very bones under the meat. My favorite is "I'll Cover You". Remarkably, this song works both as an upbeat love song for Angel and Collins and also as a funeral dirge. It is very amazing that Jonathan Larson, on his first outing, could come up with even one of these amazing songs, much less all of them. It makes me sad not only for the loss of Jonathan Larson the human being, but the loss of such an amazing artist. I highly recommend this CD. I think you'll find yourself hooked on these unique and powerful tunes.
Free Music Review: Different, but the same Hit: 5 Stars
I ordered this CD, and I couldn't possibly explain my anxiety and excitement over it coming in a day after it came out. I just wanted to hear it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. When I got it, I popped it into the CD player in my car and listened to Seasons of Love. Great version of the song, very similar to the original. If it's not broke, don't fix it. The next track was "Rent", which has never been one of my favorites.
I was totally blown away. The new arrangements are superior to the original. The highlights of it include, of course, Seasons of Love, Rent, Take Me or Leave Me, Santa Fe, I'll Cover You Reprise, Another Day, La Vie Boheme, and What You Own.
The original cast members have grown up quite a bit with these roles. Jesse L Martin and Anthony Rapp in particular have never sounded better. The newcomers, Tracie Thoms and Rosario Dawson, surpass my original expectations. Rosario's innocent voice on "Another Day" breaks my heart.
It's not perfect. Sometimes the arrangements are overwhelming to the vocals. But it's so complicated and energetic, it's amazing.
My feelings can best be expressed with a quote from the movie, Wayne's World: "It's a lot like 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'. In many ways, it's superior, but will never be as recognized as the original."
Free Music Review: Not a Renthead, but impressed by this soundtrack. Hit: 5 Stars
I've never been induced to see "Rent" onstage because the score CD is pretty awful (an opinion shared, surprisingly, by cast member Adam Pascal) -- it sounds tinny and the performances do nothing for the good songs, much less the mediocre ones. But thank God for Rob Cavallo -- he's turned this soundtrack into a showcase for the singers and put some muscle into the arrangements. As such he lifts the good songs ("Seasons of Love," "Rent," "Santa Fe," "What You Own," "Finale B") to near-greatness and makes the rest palatable. And with this production I've noticed something about Larson's songs: the best ones were given to the men in the cast, and with good reason. Anthony Rapp and Pascal are phenomenal together here (for my money, Rapp gives the best performance overall), and Jesse L. Martin's turn on "Santa Fe" is terrific (the semi-doowop backup singing by Rapp, Pascal and Wilson Herredia is wonderful, too). Hell, I even like Taye Diggs' smooth-as-silk performance on "You'll See." Yes, the boys come off the best in this (and this is that I'm a huge Idina Menzel fan and think "Wonderfalls'" Tracie Thoms sounds fabulous), and really make me want to see this movie -- something I could *never* say about the stage musical.
Free Music Review: This will light your candle! Hit: 5 Stars
Having been introduced formally to RENT by the movie's first single "Seasons of Love", I felt a bit pretentious buying the album. But, I figured that ever since SoL seduced me, the much talked about music of RENT was a must listen.
I was surprised by the amount of soul, life, love, happiness, and sex in this album! I can ALMOST tell the situation in which the song occurs, thanks to the narrative style of the song. However it does not lose its musical-ness by this style, as some musicals do. I cannot make a list of my favorites, but certain songs stand out. They haunt me.
*Light My Candle
*Tango: Maureen
*Over The Moon
*I'll Cover You
*Seasons of Love
*La Vie Boheme
*Goodbye, Love
*Out Tonight
The first three songs on my list haunt me. LMC for its odd seduction; T:M for its hilarity, and the very clear portait of Maureen it presents; and OtM for its loopiness, its quirkiness, and the strong message it gives out.
For fans of the Braodway version or for newfound fans, RENT:OMPS is a must buy!
