Free Music Notes for Rent (2005 Movie Soundtrack)

Free Music Review: great soundtrack
Hit: 5 Stars

I have own this soundtrack pretty much since it came out...

I have never been that big on musicals, but when the movie first came out my friend dragged me to the movies with him to see the movie, and right away I fell in love with it...and for the next week I had the songs stuck in my head, they just wouldn't go away...they haunted me in my sleep, but in a good way...I fall in love with all the music, so i had to get this soundtrack so I would be able to listen to these wonderful songs all the time, especially till the movie came out onto dvd, which i also own and love to death. The songs are so addictive...I am actually listening to the soundtrack as I'm writing this review, I can't pick out one song that is my favorite, I love all of them. If i had to choice "Will I" or "Without You". "Will I" is such a touching song on its own, but when its patterned with the movie it hit me hard, great song, it brings tears to my eyes when i listen it. And the same goes with "Without You" its just a very touching song and it connects with my life. Overall one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard.

Free Music Review: Musically better, slightly different
Hit: 5 Stars

Calling it different is a bit of an exaggeration becuase this CD really tries to keep it as true to the original as possible, and they do a good job. Keep in mind a couple songs were removed or shortened becuase the musical is now in a movie format.

But I'd like to point out that it's stil 95% the same. As my title states, the music is much better than the original, all instrument performances are much richer and complex without changing the actual song structure.

If you like rent, you will like this CD as the musical improvements will make it worth your money, and it stays so close to the original that you won't be turned off either.

To point out some spcific changes, I would like to say that while Rosario Dawson's (MiMi) performance is different than the original, it's a bit more girly (not in a bad way). I'm at a stand still with 'Light My Candle' becuase there's more acting in some of the words and retort, which from a pure musical performance, is borderline over the top but hopefully will come off fine in the movie itself.

Free Music Review: Excellent
Hit: 5 Stars

Simply put, this is an amazing update on the OBCR. The cast all sounds incredible, and the inclusion of Rosario Dawson and Tracie Thoms were wonderful. Their voices fit the parts perfectly, and I think that, at times, they clearly exceed their OBC counterparts.

Speaking of exceeding, overall, I think this soundtrack is better than the OBCR. Yes, everyone will be upset that certain songs were cut out (Christmas Bells for instance) but that is no reason to downplay the soundtrack. Songs like "Seasons of Love," "Rent" "Take Me or Leave Me," and "Tango: Maureen" are literally leagues above the OBC recording. The only sour note that I can really find was "I'll Cover You" -- the music is a little cheesy for me, but it still works while listening through the entire season. The reprise still makes me cry, and songs that I used to find uninteresting, "Your Eyes," "Santa Fe," "I Should Tell You," and "Without You," have all improved.

This is the soundtrack that I needed to have complete faith in the movie. I can't imagine it being bad now.

Free Music Review: RENT SCORES!
Hit: 5 Stars

This recording far exceeds any expectations I might have had. As a true "RENT-o-phile" it's difficult to imagine that anything could possibly live up to its predecessor. I many ways this recording surpasses the Original Broadway Cast recording. The order of songs is different and some of the arrangements have changed but it's a much more pumped up, cohesive and fluid representation of Jonathan Larkin's concepts. This album really nails what "RENT" is all about. If the movie comes even close to this recording it will truly be exceptional. Most notable is the additional song not present in the Broadway production. "Love Heals" feels like it's been there all along. You'll find yourself almost singing along with it the first time, though you've never heard it before. Sure, a few of the songs are shorter and things are missing that you remember from the show. But this recording delivers a punch that still leaves me sobbing with both sorrow and joy. "RENT" is exemplary. "RENT," now and forever. "No day but today."

Free Music Review: Not only pleasing to the ear, but incredibly moving.
Hit: 5 Stars

After seeing the preview for Rent this past summer and hearing "Season's Of Love" I knew that Rent would be right up my alley. I was right. It was everything I expected, and more. Honestly, it changed my life. Although I never saw the live show, I did download the original cast versions of the songs out of curiosity, and in my opinion the movie soundtrack is much better. The songs come across clearer and sound more professional. I believe Traci Thoms and Rosario Dawson perform brilliantly, and I would much rather listen to their voices than those of the original Joanne and Mimi. Yes, their voices may be less "gritty" but I do not believe it causes any loss of emotion or power, it all depends on taste I suppose. My favourite tracks include :
-Will I
-Seasons Of Love
-I Should Tell You
-Rent
-I'll Cover You (Also I'll Cover You Reprise)
-Sante Fe
-Another Day
Who am I kidding, I love them all.
Please, Do yourself a favour, see the movie, and buy the soundtrack.
