Free Music Notes for Requiem For My Friend - Preisner / Rewakowicz, Kasprzyk, Sinfonia Varsovia, et al

Free Music Review: As expected
Hit: 3 Stars

OK, let's talk clear: the music on this cd is good. It's also very much like any of his previous music, specially the score for the 'Double life of Veronique', delicate sometimes, intense at others, over a calm baseline. Thus, if you've heard him before, this is yet another example. Nothing different, and he delivers as expected.
I can see some people won't like it. And this is probably not him at his best. But some parts are really good. Some are not. The average is fairly good. I guess I was expecting something new compared to his previous compositions.

correction. It's Kasprzyk not Kaspszyk in the title. After correcting pls remove this message.

Free Music Review: Pastiche at best, embarrassing and cringe-inducing at worst
Hit: 2 Stars

I won't argue the sincerity behind Preisner's motivation for these compositions, but when he hops on the "holy minimalist" bandwagon with Arvo Part and John Tavener, he is making a horrible mistake and abandoning any concept of creativity or originality. The use of two countertenors and two tenors sets the tone, and the plaintive (and spare) use of strings (usually solo) contrasts badly with the (overdone and badly mixed) tam-tam and organ. Simply put, the Requiem sounds very much like something Part would have written on an off-day (except for the Lux Aeterna, sung in Polish for some reason not addressed, and therefore comes across as a riff on Gorecki's own maudlin and over-hyped Third Symphony).

Derivative, unengaging, unoriginal, downright puerile in places. (I almost burst out laughing at the boo-hoo-hoo opening of the Lacrimosa: it's THAT bad!) If you are seriously interested in contemporary classical vocal music, why bother with this counterfeit knock-off?
