Free Music Review: mmm forty little yum-yums just for me!!!

The Residents changed me as a musician and as a person. I think that anyone who hears this should love it. It's a shame that this kind of stuff really isn't on top 40 radio; as I listen to it this very second, I am finding it quite agreeable. This is a more subtle outing than most for the beloved anonymous eyeball men; though they still get into some really weird areas here, the aggressive weirdness of, say, FINGERPRINCE, is present on only a few tracks, such as "Margaret Freeman" and "Nice Old Man". Overall, it's sleeker, more assured, and perhaps more mature than the earlier efforts. This is in some ways a transitional album for The Residents. ESKIMO was the last album of their first phase, while this and MARK OF THE MOLE are the beginning of their high-concept period. While my personal favorite is probably FINGERPRINCE, this is one of the many highlights of their strange (and surprisingly varied) body of work. That virtually every single song stands on its own as a composition is admirable, and for this and other reasons I think The Residents are one of the greatest musical entities of the last thirty years. And forget what that other fellow said; with all due respect to his opinion, this was my first Residents album, and I've been hooked ever since. This album is forty minutes of greatness. EXACTLY forty minutes. Entertainment AND convenience! Aint it grand? Viva Los Residents!
