Free Music Review: Amazing cast for an amazing musical

Cocciante and Plamondon's French masterpiece made an easy transition to the Italian stage, not the same for the English, and was received well by audiences. I purchased this CD in Italy and was struck by how wonderful the Italian cast performed in comparison to the French (and best) cast. Lola Ponce is probably the best Esmeralda ever recorded, and the rest of the cast is wonderful. The orchestra is much better (I mean louder and more intense) than in the French version and the audience is much more reactive than in France. There are a few flaws to the voices of the performers, some are breathy in places and others are a little too raspy (Quasimodo and Clopin), but all in all this is an extrodinary cast which any Notre Dame fan will tell you is all that will do!
