For those who need a history lesson the RHS started out as an underground, quasi-amateur production in a tiny theatre. Not many people got a chance to see it in this form, and not all of them woke up to the fact that it was such a great show. In fact it might very easily have died on the spot.
This recording is of that first production. In many respects it is rough and ready, even a bit crude - but look, it is NOT a new version, "budgeting down" the familiar rock musical, it is the original, before it had a lot of money thrown at it!
It certainly doesn't compare with later productions for slickness and polish. For energy, humour, and spirit it actually compares very well indeed. The personnel in fact are basically the same. They may have been more experienced down the track but they certainly weren't more talented! But why compare anyway? This is a very clear case of comparisons being odious (or odorous).
It may very well be that some things you enjoyed about the RHS (or the RHPS) might be missing. Have a go, if find you fall into this category, to understand (and probably enjoy) what IS there - because while the show DID improve in some respects on its journey into the limelight it also (inevitably) lost something too.
