Free Music Notes for Richard Pryor: ...And It's Deep Too! The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings (1968-1992)Free Music Review: Keep it alive, nigga! Hit: 4 Stars
I've always known who Richard Pryor was, whether for his bad boy reputation in the tabloids, his movies, or his comedy routines. The material is dated now (like most comic routines), but still makes you laugh. He was able to take the most terrifying, horrible things in life and make us smile about it. Whether it's setting himself on fire while freebasing, heart attacks, relationships gone bad, or family dysfuntion, he pulled through. He might not be a hero, a martyr, or even an all around nice guy, but he sure is a funny nigga!
It meant a lot to me to hear about these things. In one stretch of 8 weeks years ago my mom got cancer, my dad flipped out on me and in a fit of rage punched me in the face because it was my fault, my job threatened to fire me, I was in a car accident, I had a falling out with 2 childhood friends (one showed her true colors after 20 years, the other was mad at me because she failed chemistry, wasn't going to get into medical school, and the boyfriend she was cheating on finally got wise to her so naturally all that was my fault), the second love of my life and I ended it, a guy I was going out with in Detroit broke it off by writing me an email, and I got a Christmas card from a man who used to stalk me 10 years ago. Everything was falling apart, but out of no where Richard Pryor dropped into my lap and gave me some great advise:
"Get over it, bitch!"
So I laughed, because sometimes all you can do is laugh. I was either going to blow my head off or I was going to laugh, and like Richard, I choose to laugh. And I even took a spiritual journey to Africa to recollect myself, and I emerged the stronger. I might be just a white bitch, and the man is so sick he can't even talk, but he spoke to me in my time of need with the wisest words anyone could've given. So thanks for making me smile, I'm one tough bitch now!
Free Music Review: Reply to "set the record straight" Hit: 4 Stars
The problem is, I have Pryor's work in both vinyl LPs and this boxed set; there is a noticeable difference in content between the two, and my suspicion is some of the really serious non-pc stuff in his earlier releases was edited from the CD set for reasons unknown except by the producers. Movie makers do this all the time: a viewer sees one version of a movie in the theater then finds another version with a lot of the good parts cut out when buying and viewing the movie at home on DVD or tape. The only way Richard Pryor's fans will know if I'm telling the truth is to have access to both earlier vinyl releases and the new boxed set. I am blessed to enjoy both; moreover, having cut my teeth on this artist's earlier works on LP records, the new release is lacking not because of Pryor but because the CD boxed set organizers, for whatever reason, omitted parts of his original intent. My opinion still stands based on being lucky enough to physically own this man's comedy in the old and new media. No disrespect to Richard Pryor in the least; he is the greatest! The boxed set is very much worth twice the price to those of us who appreciate Richard Pryor's many talents. Enjoy!!
Free Music Review: Pretty Good Hit: 4 Stars
I was disappointed with iTunes very limited offerings of Richard Pryor's work. They could only offer PART of the classic Is It Something I Said?
Needless to say, this collection offers this and all of his most popular stuff (Post Is It Something I Said). What was missing was the complete recording of Black Ben the Blacksmith and Are You Serious. While this collection offers the classic title sketch from Black Ben, I think other bits such as Jesse and Fighting should have been included.
Aside from these few but important ommissions this is a good collection.
Free Music Review: Great but... Hit: 4 Stars
This box set is great, but some of the content on these CD's is different from what was originally released on vinyl. Not bad but in my opinion, the original stuff was better. Nonetheless, whether one is a veteran or new to his comedy, this anthology of Richard Pryor's work is well worth owning and a joy to listen to again and again.
