Free Music Review: A strong new release from the Indie Rocker

It is unfortunate that Richard Thompson has never found more than a small but dedicated cult audience. His Brit-Folk-Rock sound has influenced popular music more than he gets credit for. And Sweet Warrior is another great example of this. Though not as consistant as albums such as Mock Tudor, several tracks on this rank with the best of his material. (Especially anti-war track "Dad's Gunna Kill me.") And there are no bad songs on the album either. (Though "Sneaky Boy" seems probably needed some polishing prior to release)
Overall, worth your purchase whether or not you're acquainted with his material.

this is what one has come to expect from mr thompson. great songwriting, great voice, great guitar. what i want to comment on here mostly is that guitar. this is mr thompson's first electric guitar based album in a few years, and the break he took away from it seems to have paid off well. his return to the instrument (at least on record) sounds like someone just discovering their own brilliance, just riding up a peak of genius. the electric guitar work here is astonishing. fresh, creative, and a joy to listen to. makes me wish that i had talent. you go, guy.Free Music Review: RT fan since before I was born

only kidding, Valerie got me. I've had every recording of RT since '87. He helped me through many a tough day. This new recording is a comfort that this gentleman has not lost his touch. he has brought me places less traveled. I'll be seeing him in the front row at Berkley in Boston. I can't wait! His guitar work is awesome on sweet warrior. My gal wants to marry him. I want hear Francesca, I'll never give up. and Guns are the Tongues. I will know this CD before the concert. I've been a Richard Thompson fan for about 20 years though I haven't been too excited about his output of recent years. This album however has rekindled my interest. In Sweet Warrior, Thompson returns to his unique, lyrical folk-rock-punk style. His vocals, which are an acquired taste, to say the least, never sounded better. The guitar work is as always, nothing short of brilliant,(imagine Mark Knopfler on steroids). Great band of backing musicians as well.Free Music Review: ahhhhhhhh, there's the guitar!
