Free Music Review: excellent but flawed

I've got 2 KOTZEN cd's and like both of them. They couldn't be more different. One is instrumental and somewhere between JOHNNY A and SATRIANI and this one is all songs that are hard to categorise. Some SOFT ROCK, some BLUES inspired tracks and some straight out ROCKERS. The guitar playing is brilliant ( if understated ) and very emotive. He definetly has a recognisable style and is always a pleasure to listen to. His voice is surprisingly good and the material suits his vocals very well. Even the songs are generally good and follow no discernable influences. It's also nice to have a guitarist that doesn't need to hit you over the head with his licks at every opportunity. The playing for the most part is subtle and some of the qualities won't be apparent until many listens. HOWEVER.......this could easily have been 5 stars, but the lyrics are infantile and you can finish the rhyme for each line without ever having heard the song before. VERY POOR, but the overall quality of the musik and the guitar playing compensate for any shortcomings. If you are into the guitar you should certainly include this mans musik in your collection.
