Free Music Review: Criminally Overlooked

Let me start off by saying that this is almost nothing like Bon Jovi. Probably most of the people who are reading are Jovi fans, but anyone who thinks that Bon Jovi is a shallow hair metal band should not let that keep them from buying this. This album is best described as blues-driven hard rock. Richie's voice at first sounds much like Jon Bon Jovi's, but that is because Richie's backing vocals are an integral part of Bon Jovi's (the band) sound. Richie also plays fantastic lead guitar and brings in Eric Clapton for a guest appearance on "Mr. Bluesman."
The album starts off with "Rest in Peace," which is an excellent song to begin the album. Next is the title track. This song is driven by Richie's excellent, passionate vocals and guitar solos. This song alone is worth the cost of the CD. "Ballad of Youth" and "Rosie" would have been Top 20 hits had Bon Jovi released these, but these are in no way lame pop songs. The only difference is that these are more upbeat than the others on the album. Eric Clapton guests on the decent "Mr. Bluesman." "Father Time" is a very powerful song. Once again Richie's voice is so emotional, it is impossible not to be moved by this song. Fantastic guitar work as well.
It's interesting how Richie broke away from the constraints of being in Bon Jovi and produced one of the greatest albums ever made. By throwing away commercialism he has reached a new level that I never would have thought possible by only hearing his work with Bon Jovi. I read somewhere (I believe that it was a Rolling Stone article) that Richie wishes that he had been more commercial in his approach. Ironic, yet sad. He will never again be involved in an album like this again. His next solo album was more adult contemporary, while he hasn't done crap with Bon Jovi (Jovi has put out albums, yes, but they haven't done anything new or good in at least ten years). So definitely pick this up. At $9.98 you can't lose. This album never received the recognition that it deserved and it is a disgrace because this a strong album that did not have commercial success because the artist refused to sell out.
