I just picked this CD up today on a lark (and I really am the least impulsive shopper I know). My family actually made fun of me for buying "Rick Springfield". However, after we finished listening to it, the jokes stopped. It really is a nice CD full of traditional Christmas carols, acoustic guitar and Springfield. I couldn't buy this CD at Christmastime. It was sold out. I decided to get it after Christmas so that I could have it for Christmas 2008 which is far away. I listened to only the first track and it sounded really nice.

This New Christmas CD seemed like a wonderful idea in the "concept" stage, but when I actually heard it,I became a little depressed. I have been a fan of Rick's music since I was 12 years old and well, I have noticed a great change in his voice over the years. It is certainly most evident in this new release. The richness of his vocal quality was always suppressed to his lack of classical training, but he was younger and the sound he did get was still very good. Now, age or possibly a combination of elements have put continual stress on his vocal cords and it has played havoc with his tone quality. His voice has adopted a "rasp" that would be cute if it wasn't so depressing. Some people deliberately treat their vocal cords with cigarettes and whiskey to make this sound which is fine, for a particular style of music(i.e. Tom Waits), but Rick's style was not of that genre. His current vocal sound is due to unwanted vocal cord damage. I still love his music, but deep songs that require "sustaining" notes(which are nearly all of the songs on this Christmas album), are really beyond his range now.
