Free Music Review: Original Song "Christmas With You" Gave me the Shivers.......But not the Good Kind
Hit: 2 Stars

Rick has a Beautiful, Raspy voice. Perfect in it's imperfections. I am a longtime Fan and enjoyed his unique version of each each of the Christmas Classics. Rick's raw acoustic version of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is my favorite song on the CD. His version of "Deck the Halls" could have used some Cow Bell. The majority of the songs he chose to cover are not among my favorite Christmas tunes. If you're a Born again Christian type you will love his choice of songs (maybe that's why Rick chose to promote
this CD on the FOX news network)That's one of the reason's why I did not give this a higher rating. The other reason is his original song "Christmas with you". It is about the mothers/families of "Fallen Soldiers" missing their deceased loved one who has been killed in Iraq. Some of the proceeds from the sale of this CD go to a charity Having to do with "Mothers of Fallen Soldiers" I found it gimmicky, trite, and unmoving...As an Aunt of a "Fallen Soldier". I would have preferred more Peace on Earth Goodwill toward your fellow man, type of Christmas classics and as an original song. Without that, next Christmas there will be thousands more Mothers of "Fallen Soldiers" that he can sing his song for. I don't think that was his point and I am sure he meant well but "Christmas with you" just rang hollow for me. I was disappointed.

Free Music Review: Waaaay too mellow for the Rick I know and love
Hit: 2 Stars

Thank you, everyone, for the reviews on here. After reading them and listening to the samples, I will not waste my money on this release. I have ALL of Rick's releases (even going back to the first LP from the early 70s), and I love everything he has ever put out, but this is just too mellow for my tastes. I thought he was going down a wonderful direction with S/D/A/A, and liked most of the cover songs cd, but until he puts out another cd of self-penned tunes, I'm staying away.

Free Music Review: it's not the Rick you remember...
Hit: 2 Stars

If you're a die-hard Springfield fan, you have already bought this. If you're just so-so, or a nostalgic fan, don't do it. As much as I love Christmas music and the old Rick, this new cd just doesn't do it for me. It's not sexy or sentimental or smooth-a let down for this Rick rocker.

Free Music Review: Passionless Singing
Hit: 1 Stars

I have Rick Springfield as a ringback tone on my cell phone. In 1981 played air guitar on my bed rocking out to "Jesse's Girl." I stayed with him, even through Tao, and smiled when he made a cameo appearance on The Colbert Report. His rocking tunes always rocked my world, and his mellow stuff always hit the right notes with me. But this Christmas CD is the dealbreaker.

I tried so hard to like this album. I honestly did. Yet a third of the way through I was glancing down at the minute/second display on the radio, hoping the given song was almost over.

What I always loved about Rick Springfield was his soulful, passionate delivery of his lyrics, on his ballads and his up-tempo songs. He would always sing like he meant it -- like his life depended on it, no matter the tune.

Not anymore.

I have never before heard a Christmas album where all the songs sounded virtually the same -- and where that 'same' could be defined as the singer whining/pining throughout each number. It sounds as though each track were recorded in one take. Each song sounds like it is in the same key as the previous tune.

But worst of all is the complete lack of heart, something I never expected. I can forgive, even enjoy, a raspy voice (Bob Dylan's new Christmas album, for example, is a million times more heartfelt than Rick's.) But if this album were cut by someone named "Rob Springfield," it never would have made it out the studio door.

If you want passionless, genericly sung tunes, sadly, this CD has them.

Nothing wrong with having peaked in 1982. But I can no longer pretend otherwise. This CD is on its way to the donation bin.

Free Music Review: Disappointing
Hit: 1 Stars

Sad really. Rick's voice is pretty much shot, very little range, he sounds hoarse on every song. The best track by far is an instrumental faux-Beach Boys "Deck the Halls." My copy is already on the way to "Goodwill".
