Free Music Review: Wide Appeal From An 80s Icon

To be honest, when I heard about a CD of covers from Rick Springfield, I was very skeptical. Here's an artist who calls himself a songwriter first; his energy and passion for his own music has gathered himself a large and loyal following.
I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised with this record. Firstly, the choice of tunes gives you some insight into the artist himself, as they are songs "he wishes he had written." Secondly, the songs are pulled from the era when he was being influenced and the era in which he was scoring his own musical success, lending a familiarity for this audience to these tunes. Finally, I have to say even the songs that aren't going to be familiar to Springfield's usual demographic have a broad based appeal.
There's no denying that this marks a departure from his hard rocking, angst filled previous recording, "shock/denial/anger/acceptance". No question. These two releases can be thought of as kind of the yin and the yang of Rick Springfield. One for when you want to sing out your heart in alliance with his anger, and one when you want to croon softly underneath a starlit sky.
I found this record very appealing but for different reasons than his last release. The energy of Baker Street, the delicious take on Human, the haunting Imagine, the inclusion of his self penned Cry...all of these and more make this release worth snagging. Those who have been to recent shows and love the RS of your memory, you won't be disappointed with this release.
