Free Music Review: Rihanna Gives R&B, Pop, Reggae AND "a bit of" Rock A Good Name! THANK GOD!
Hit: 5 Stars

Wow, I knew this album would be good. After the disappointing chart performance of her debut album, "Music Of The Sun", Rihanna has already come out with this mind-blowing sophomore effort, "A Girl Like Me", 8 months later. Whether or not this was a rushed effort, it's still amazing how an 18-year-old 1-smash-hit-wonder can display so much unbelievable artistic growth in a matter of months. Whereas her decent debut album set her apart from the growing female R&B pack with smooth, Caribbean-inflected R&B/Pop, "A Girl Like Me" has Rihanna broadening her horizons by exploring all kinds of genres.

A perfect example of this is "Kisses Don't Lie", which effervescently melds Rock & Reggae for an exciting listening experience. On the aforementioned cut, Rihanna sings about her unsureness of a relationship & how a kiss will tell the truth apart from the lies of the world. "Kisses Don't Lie" truly is a well-written song. #1 smash hit club rocker "S.O.S. (Rescue)" also takes a sample from Soft Cell's classic "Tainted Love" (which everyone should know by now), resulting in another vibrant, Rock-inflected highlight. The lyrics to "S.O.S." aren't that creative, but it's a club banger...what do you expect?
Another club banger not to be missed is the addictive Rihanna/Sean Paul collaboration "Break It Off", which was originally meant for Sean Paul's sophomore effort, "The Trinity". Despite the fact that Sean Paul's voice fills up most of the track, Rihanna still manages to keep up with the Dancehall superstar with seductive vocals over an infectious beat.

However, Rihanna is more than your typical club-going seductress, as displayed in many of her gorgeous ballads. Penned by label mate Ne-Yo, the emotionally charged piano/violin ballad, "Unfaithful", shockingly puts Rihanna in the perspective of a woman wrapped up in her own heartbreaking guilt through emotional vocals, as well as touching lyrics & quirky metaphors ("I don't wanna be a murderer") about her two-timing ways. There's plenty more room for confessional heartbreak on songs like the reminiscent slow jam "We Ride" (which also makes for a relaxing summer tune, especially when you're taking a drive), & the dramatic, saddening ballads "Final Goodbye", "A Million Miles Away" & "P.S. (I'm Still Not Over You)", all of which hold almost just as much lyrical brilliance & smooth production as "Unfaithful".

If you're still waiting for a lacklustre track to spit, s**t & p**s on, don't hold your breath. Rihanna still takes time to croon the truth alongside singer Dwane Husbands on "Dem Haters", an obvious anti-haters tracks complete with top-notch lyrics & catchy guitar riffs. Some of the lyrics in the laid-back, balladic, contemplative, guitar-driven title track could easily be confused as hidden stabs at your typical, average female ("Some girls play the game / They all walk & talk & dress the same / Nothing new to say / Don't they realize, that it's so easy to see through their disguise/ Makes me wonder why), but it's still another great ballad to include in her lengthy selection. The obsessive "Selfish Girl" & the catchy dreaminess of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" also give her a chance to keep herself close to her Caribbean roots (as shown through the beats), while also providing more balladic magic. The way she shows her Caribbean heritage in her music is what kept me hooked to her in the first place.

The bonus remix of "If It's Lovin' That U Want (feat. Corey Gunz)" isn't as great as the original, but it's clearly marked bonus for a reason. Rihanna has delivered an incredibly solid sophomore effort which has more consistency than Beyonce's "Dangerously In Love" (even if it follows the same template), more variety than Christina Milian's "So Amazin'" (damn, it hurts me to say that so much) & a less explicit, but equally convincing realness than Teairra Mari's debut. As much as I hate Jay-Z for mismanaging Teaiira Mari & dropping Christina Milian, you can't deny that he really knew what he was doing when Rihanna & everyone else made this album. 5 stars, easily! BUY IT!

A Girl Like Me Poster

With A Girl Like Me, the Barbadian teen-queen Rihanna is looking to transfer all claims of royalty to the summertime pop charts. If anybody's going to rule them, she pretty much proclaims by way of "SOS," a song no less irresistible, intoxicating, and all-out cool than 2005's "Pon de Replay," off her debut, she's it. That's not to say this new disc is anything like its predecessor overall. Where Music of the Sun was mostly what its title suggests--a romp through an anglo-friendly island with no sunscreen required--A Girl Like Me is more reflective and a little rueful; you get the sense it was crafted in part to show her range, with executive producer Jay-Z guiding her through it gracefully. "Unfaithful" is a noir-ish testing of the R&B waters, and it goes so well that Rihanna wastes no time skinny-dipping her way into the deep end--"Final Goodbye," "P.S. (I'm Still Not Over You)," and "A Million Miles Away" all betray juicy bits of Beyonce. Back in barefoot bikini-girl land, though--a territory that covers roughly half this disc--the party's still going strong. Rihanna gives dancehall legend Sean Paul a run for his money with the bouncing "Break It Off," and "We Ride" makes you want to roll down the windows and stick your head out the passenger side. Crank it up and keep the sunglasses handy. --Tammy La Gorce
