Free Music Notes for Under the BlacklightFree Music Review: Thank you Jenny & Rilo Kiley Hit: 5 Stars
Having loved their "more adventerous" album, esp. "It's A Hit" and many other greats that offered. Following Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins and hearing "Rise Up With Fists" - I can fully see how "Silver Lining" has developed, awesome guitar work!!! 5/5 now this song should be a "hit".
The album is a lot more pop rock than alternaive but Jenny has a very strong controlled voice she treats us to some "ohhh's and ahhh's" particularly in "Close Call", "Breakin' Up", and "The Angels Hung Around".
Other favourites include: "15", and "Dejalo". All in all the album start to finish is listenable, very rare these days and I am glad to be spending money on artists like Rilo Kiley who don't produce junk, rather they produce quality pop infested tunes. It is a shame that most of their stuff won't get played in Auckland, NZ, however I am hopeful to see them on tour maybe some day and only wish they get more exposure to stadiums but hopefully the pressure doesn't ruin them!! Keep strong Rilo Kiley and thanks for a wonderful new album.
Free Music Review: I'm disappointed with all the bad reviews Hit: 5 Stars
Ok, please people, do not review cds on one listen. PLEASE?! PLEASE?! COULD YOU NOT?!
When you buy/download/acquire this CD, sit down, put it on, surf the internet, cook, do whatever you do. This CD will automatically become one of your favorites. It is definitely different than any previous Rilo Kiley Album's sound but that doesn't make it bad. Sure, we would accept something that sounded like the old stuff but that doesn't make this one bad. This CD starts out great with the song Silver Lining which is so pretty you can't help but love it. This CD is filled with poppy vocals/hooks and will not disappoint anyone that goes ahead and gets this album.
Rilo Kiley definitely did a great job by putting this disc out, now they can never be considered stale with this relatively new sound. And I'm sure the next CD they put out will also have a different ring and it'll be another thing the fans can grab on to. Jenny Lewis has one of the prettiest voices in history and it fits perfectly. GET this Album and enjoy it.
Free Music Review: This Album Goes Toe To Toe With More Adventurous Hit: 5 Stars
From the gate this album delivers! The first six songs are all hit material ranging from pop to indie to disco, as are the last four songs. Rilo Kiley keeps getting better with each new release. The songs are all well written and Blake Sennett's turn at vocal on Dreamworld is on the money and very reminiscent of Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac. Jenny Lewis' songwriting and vocals are, as usual, Hall of Fame material. The song '15' is another Jenny Lewis burner reminiscent of Dusty Springfield. The opening track 'Silver Lining' is a top 10 hit hit if ever there was one. Every song on this album is well worth listening to repeatedly, the only exception being the song 'Dejalo'. I just couldn't get into this song. Bottom line, this is a classic Rilo Kiley album. I can't wait to hear what they come up with next. After reading some of the reviews I was hesitant to purchase this CD but I eventually made the leap. I'm so glad I did. I would have missed out in a big way. Buy this! You won't be sorry you did.
Free Music Review: Fresh sound, same Kiley subtext Hit: 5 Stars
After reading online conversations regarding this album, my expectations were low. Having been increasingly impressed by the maturing of this band from one album to the next I believe all hard-core Kiley fans (myself among them) were awaiting the new - and slow in coming - album with something akin to waiting for the birth of a child. And when it came the air was let out of this happy face balloon. This wasn't Rilo Kiley! We all said. BUT IT IS! I was sorely disappointed at first. Could barely listen a second time. Could listen a third. Couldn't wait for the fourth and fifth and so on. It gets under your skin. You jones for one song or other. They get stuck in your head. They are fun, unexpected. Expected is angst, anger, disappointment. And it's all there, dressed up as hook-laden pop. Purchase this album without fear. And listen three times. That's the magic number.
Free Music Review: The Fourth time's a charm Hit: 5 Stars
So I guess people that review this album fall into one of three categories: 1) they liked rilo kiley's old material, but hate this album, 2) they hate rilo kiley's old material, but love this album, and 3) they are the true fans and love everything rilo kiley has ever done.
I will have to say that I'm in the second category. I didn't particularly like Rilo Kiley's first three albums and I earnestly tried to get into them. I was completely over giving rilo kiley another chance, but my friend had one of their new songs on her myspace and I really liked what I heard.
that said... if you never understood what the fascination was with rilo kiley and you didnt care for their old material - give this album a listen. it's not just a good album, it's a great album. It's definitely something I've been waiting for ever since rilo kiley's first album.
