Free Music Notes for Under the Blacklight

Free Music Review: A jump to a new level for Rilo Kiley
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm always astonished when I discover a new band and go read the reviews of their various albums. Almost invariably, there's a subset of rabid fans who seem disappointed by every new effort from the group. And so it is with this album, it seems.

In this case, I was a blank slate: I'd never heard any Rilo Kiley before. In short order, I obtained Under the Blacklight, Take Offs and Landings, and More Adventurous, in that order. My takeaway is that Under the Blacklight is an outstanding work, and although the other two albums are pleasant enough, they are simply not on the level of the band's latest effort. There's no RK song I've heard on those other albums that is comparable to "Silver Lining" or "The Angels Hung Around." I can't get Blacklight in general out of my head or off my CD player. Great disc.

Free Music Review: How a Very Good Alt-Country-Rock Band Made a Great Power Pop Album
Hit: 5 Stars

So everybody's comparing this to Fleetwood Mac, which is apt, but I also hear Big Star - in the wide-open sound, the unpredictable rhythmic oomph, that mysterious All-American-by-way-of-Another-Planet lyrical sensibility. And Jenny Lewis is a vocalist who's as sexy as Stevie Nicks and as wily as Alex Chilton. Color me mystified by those calling this one a disappointment following the very-good-but-not-great More Adventurous, a judgment that only makes sense of if you program yourself to willfully prefer the oblique and foggy to the direct and crystal clear, just out of good natured orneriness (I'm looking at you, Pitchfork Media). But then again, I'm the kind of cad who doesn't start finding a band's sound truly exciting until they do their proverbial 'sell-out' record.

Free Music Review: Addicted to Jenny Lewis
Hit: 5 Stars

Admittedly I bought this album at a time when I can't get enough of Jenny's vocals so my review may be somewhat biased. But many of these songs have jumped to my most listened to on iTunes in the past week. I think Under the Blacklight takes a few more listens to appreciate than some of R.K.'s previous albums. I love the synth on Dejalo and the rock on Moneymaker. A few of the tunes, like Silver Lining and Breakin' Up, have great sing-along-capabilities. Maybe it's just me but there were a few times when I heard a little early 90's Liz Phair and Frente.

If you're at all a fan of Jenny Lewis or Rilo Kiley I can't imagine that this album would disappoint.

Free Music Review: My momma is an atheist. If I stay out late she don't get p**sed.
Hit: 5 Stars

I can't believe that Rilo Kiley fans are just giving this album mixed reviews! These are smartly crafted pop songs. Great hooks, great lyrics.

Jenny Lewis' voice is perfect. Given what appears to be simple, straightforward songs, she could have easily coasted. However, she adds such nuance and depth. Even if she is singing a ridiculous lyric like "Danger to the Smoke Detector." She just goes off!

How many singers actually do that? Beyonce, no. Rihanna, no. Kelly Clarkson, no way. They just do their vocal trills and runs, American Pop style, and everyone just thinks that's such great dramatic singing. Guess what, it's not.

Free Music Review: Wow - So glad I found this band
Hit: 5 Stars

I recently discovered Rilo Kiley, and I feel like I was missing great music for so many years. Of their albums, this is my favorite one. Overall, it is more upbeat than their previous albums. Jenny Lewis has a crystal-clear voice that I love. Favorite songs on this album: Silver Lining, The Moneymaker, 15, and Give A Little Love.

Parts of the song "Close Call" sounds so much like "Plateau" by Nirvana...Some fans complain this album isn't as original, but I don't mind the familiar sound of some of the songs. I like the catchy beats, and I also like the lyrics on this album.

I also really like their album "More Adventurous."
