Free Music Notes for Under the BlacklightFree Music Review: Best CD of the year (and that's not just my opinion). Hit: 5 Stars
The story of my summer 2007 goes like this; I buy the new Rilo Kiley CD, "Under The Blacklight" after hearing it in an independent record store in Florida. My girlfriend and I love it so much we get copies for both our houses and both our cars. We play it for others. They all flip, all want it and get it. The CD becomes the new go-to for gifts (we all bought around 25 copies between us). Conversations become "what's your fave cut off the cd today?" or "Which song did you wake up with in your head that you can't shake?". I now have all of Rilo Kiley's music and all of Jenny Lewis'. Amazingly catchy, smart music.
Free Music Review: If you're new to Rilo Kiley, you'll love this album. Hit: 5 Stars
A lot of the criticism I read about this album comes from "long-time" fans of the band, and I certainly understand this dynamic. The rest of the criticism seems to be directed at the lyrics. So, to make a long story short, if you don't expect a whole lot from an album's lyrics, and if you haven't already formed an opinion about how this band should sound, you will definitely enjoy this album. The melodies and arrangements are beautiful and fun, and the lyrics are playful and unusual. And then there's Jenny Lewis's singing. I originally rated this album 5, but 4 seems more correct now.
Free Music Review: Different-- but I dig it! Hit: 5 Stars
I was excited to get my hands on Rilo Kiley's newest CD, but I was totally unprepared for their new sound. I've been a Rilo Kiley fan since their first record, and I've followed the various band members in their musical side projects, so I'm used to their sound changing with nearly every album. This record is like 70s/80s funk/pop and new wave mixed with their typical genious lyrics and made distinct with Jenny Lewis' wonderfully soft vocals. I'm really digging it, I don't think I've been able to get "Breaking Up" out of my head since I bought this CD!
Free Music Review: Can't stop playing this CD Hit: 5 Stars
I heard high praise for this CD on CBS Sunday Morning, listened to the soundbites on Amazon and ordered it. Prior to the blurb on TV, I had never heard of Rilo Kiley. After listening to this CD, I've ordered everything else they have recorded! This is great beautiful music melded with wry and subversive lyrics. What Steely Dan is to jazz, Rilo Kiley is to pop music. Jenny Lewis' voice is incredible. Just buy it - the only thing you'll regret is that you can't stop hearing the music in your head once you've stopped listening to it.
Free Music Review: Rilo Kiley Returns Hit: 5 Stars
The long-awaited new Rilo Kiley album, Under the Blacklight, may not be what same fans expected. A far cry from tracks such as 'My Slumbering Heart' and 'A Better Son/Daughter', this album evokes more R&B tones than were anticipated. Though it may not quite be the Rilo Kiley that many fans remember, the songs on this album attest to the fact that both Jenny Lewis and the rest of the band have stuck to their guns and come up with something new and appealing. My faith in Rilo Kiley is reaffirmed!
