Free Music Notes for Under the BlacklightFree Music Review: Musicians are not jukeboxes. Hit: 4 Stars
Rilo Kiley owe us as listeners nothing. And fans don't owe Rilo Kiley anything. If "Under The Blacklight" offends you so much, give it to someone who might like or trade it in to your local used CD shop. All musicians reach a point where their earliest fans have to decide whether they continue on the journey or try and pigeonhole the act into a narrow view of what their music "really sounds like." Personally, I love the sheen and the upbeat sound to this record. I've spun it countless times since I bought it. The title track and "Silver Lining" are obvious slices of pop perfection, but I'm just as fond as "The Angels Hung Around" and "15". I've never been fond of Blake's vocals, but "Dreamland" is a good one, too. Also, "Breakin' Up" is about as liberating as music gets.
Bottom line: "Radio friendly" and "major label" are not necessarily equal to "sell-out" - compromising art for outside interests does that. (See Liz Phair's last two records for a real example of this phenom). If it's not your cup of tea, move on. Nobody's been betrayed and it's not up to you to decide who the "real" Rilo Kiley are or who their "real" fans are.
Free Music Review: Short Term Memory Hit: 4 Stars
It's amazing to read reviews from "true Rilo Kiley" fans and have them bash this album for sounding different from the other albums. If Jenny and Blake put new lyrics to Science vs. Romance or The Frug would that make them happy? No. Bands change, they evolve. Jenny went Solo, Blake had the Elected... They've been exposed to different people, different styles and it comes through in their music.
Listen to any of the other records and tell me they aren't all different. They've changed every time and true fans are along for the ride. The people complaining are the ones who jumped on the More Adventurous bandwagon... So their opinion is pointless. Here's the deal: I've loved Rilo Kiley since 1999 when I heard The Frug on the soundtrack for Desert Blue and I've been on board ever since. I like this album. It's fun and catchy and is very much a Rilo Kiley album. I saw them in Chicago last week and have grown to love it even more. Jenny's voice is amazing.
Don't let anyone sway your opinion. If you like Rilo Kiley, not just the single off the last record, you'll like this album. I give it 4.5.
Free Music Review: Ch ch changes... Hit: 4 Stars
Boy, do loyal fans hate change. They feel cheated (sometimes, rightfully so.) But change isn't always bad. Punk couldn't contain The Clash and "London Calling" was born (much to the dismay of original fans.) The Sugarcubes couldn't contain Bjork and now she is free to do whatever it is Bjork does. This leads me to the Rilo Kiley debate. Face it fans: the hipster, indie scene was too small for the stunningly talented Jenny Lewis. She now belongs to the world and Warner Bros. (sadly) and there is nothing we can do about it. Enjoy the new disc as a new beginning for Ms. Lewis. Silver lining and The Angels Hang Around are the closest you're going to get to vintage RK (break out the old tunes instead.) Under The Blacklight sees our favorite little band going in new directions. There's the disco-lite of The Moneymaker and the 70's Ronstandt/Fleetwood Mac stlye of Under The Blacklight. Blake Sennett plays sunshine-splashed notes up and down his guitar. The melodies abound to the point of a sugar high (and crash). Jenny Lewis was meant for bigger things. This is her first step into a mainstream career...
Free Music Review: Buzz Worthy Hit: 4 Stars
A friend recommended Rilo Kiley to me so I purchased this CD not having heard one single song by them. I like to hear new artists' that are outside of the "pop box" - Rilo Kiley is it! Nothing short of great! The music on this CD is very original and very fun. This release has a mix of up-tempo songs along with some great ballads.
I like most of the songs on this set but my 2 favorite tracks include: "Give A Little Love" and "Dejalo". "Give A Little Love" is so melodic and beautiful. With a great beat and awesome vocals. "Dejalo" is a great up-tempo song that makes you just want to tap your feet or get up and dance. Both amazing! Although there are a few songs that I could leave - the good outweighs the bad.
This is a group that should have more buzz surrounding them because there are few groups out there like this. That's what makes Rilo Kiley a standout in my book. You should own this!

Free Music Review: The Silver Lining Hit: 4 Stars
While watching Logo one night I came across the video for "Silver Lining" and realized I had never heard of Rilo Kiley. That's right they are one of those bands that seemed to have fallen below my radar though they've been together since '98 and the lead singer even released a solo album.
What caught my attention at first made me think they were trying to be a harder version of Tori Amos, but the more I got into "Silver Lining" I realized how cool it was, and the rest of the album Under The Black Light is just as entertaining.
Not as brutal as a full on rock band yet not nearly as eccentric as Tori - they're more of an alternative set of the 80's combining some country-ish hooks with piano laden pop and rock. A bit like Miss Derringer minus the constant old west nods. It's pretty entertaining overall with "The Angels Hung Around" being a fun little highlight but "Silver Lining" is by far the best track.
