Free Music Notes for Under the BlacklightFree Music Review: Jenny wins Hit: 4 Stars
(4 & 1/2 stars) With this new Rilo Kiley disc, my vote comes down much more on the side of those who say it's really great than those who are disappointed because it doesn't merely repeat their last CD. Most of songs are just so catchy and enjoyable that I'm in danger of addiction to Under the Blacklight. I generally admire a band's willingness to stretch their boundaries a bit, and RK does that on this album, with flavorings of 70s disco, Americana (maybe carried over from Ms Lewis' solo record), funk, and other mysterious stuff. Jenny Lewis is my favorite singer these days, and her vocals on this CD are particularly wonderful. I also had fun playing the old "spot the influences" game, especially with the Buckingham-Mac sound of "Dreamworld." Jenny's whimsical and humorous sides are also prominent on several tracks, notably "Dejalo" and "Smoke Detector." Anyway, I recommend this CD. Give it a try!
Free Music Review: Not sure if it their best yet, but certainly their most consistent. Hit: 4 Stars
There is only one throwaway cut on this disc and oddly enough it is the title cut. I have always been a big Jenny Lewis fan. Both her solo music and Rilo Kiley's tunes grow on you. Sometimes it takes a few listens to fully comprehend the cleaverness of her lyrics as well. For example, I have been listening to Rabbit Fur Coat more in the last few months than in the first few months of its release. Perhaps in 6 months I will consider this a 5 star effort.
This disc does have the feel of being a bit more commercial than their other efforts, but personally I do not find that a bad thing. Favorite cuts are Silver Lining and Dreamworld at this point, but that will probably change. That is the great beauty of Jenny Lewis and Rilo Kiley
Free Music Review: Had never before heard of Rilo Kiley Hit: 4 Stars
I had never before heard of Rilo Kiley and generally don't like this type of music. I normally prefer rock, hip-hop, and classic rock. I kept hearing hype about this record and finally bought it. It's amazing! There's so many good songs on here that combine gorgeous melodies with depressing lyrical subject matter. I've played this for a few of my friends and the rest of us really enjoyed. Compared to all the over-commercialized crap coming out of the music industry these days, this is a hidden diamond.
Free Music Review: It's a K-tel Compilation By One Band Hit: 4 Stars
Over-produced, with more genre-hopping than Ween. Like a k-tel compilation, you've got a classic soul song about statutory rape (15), a disco classic (breakin' up), a song in the style of Sarah McLaughlin(title track), latin (dejalo), country-rock (angels hung around), etc. Some of these songs are instant classics, but what's missing is what makes Rilo Kiley so special. This is an album of experiements, most of them successful but few of them profound.
Free Music Review: everyones a critic Hit: 4 Stars
Im a huge Rilo fan,as well as Jennys solo work,so when I first heard this I thought it would take a while to grow on me.Like all their fans,I constantly return to 'Execution' and 'Take Offs' but by the second listen I was hooked.By the third listen(which followed immediately my 2nd listen)I was in love. This is a brilliant album. This is a different album. All their albums are a different album.Wouldnt it be so boring if they were all the same?
