Free Music Notes for Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade; Stravinsky: Song of the Nightingale [Hybrid SACD]Free Music Review: Reiner stifles yawn at reviewer Hit: 5 Stars
Unless you are comatose, this recording will send your blood pumping and make your hair spontaneously combust. I cannot fathom the 'yawn' comment. Perhaps they listened to the music sans any familiarity with the pieces, or perhaps they are ignorant of the stupendous number of other, not so wonderful, recordings available, especially of the Scheherazade. If for no other reason, listen to the unison triple-tongue passage in the last movement of the Scherherzade by the brass. No other recording has even come close. Wow. I understand the last movement was recorded whole, without retakes or insertions, something almost unheard of now. Reiner was noted for the extraordinary energy of his recordings (as in Strauss etc.) and this is no exception. Buy it.
Free Music Review: Great Sound, One Of The Best Performances Of Scheherazade Hit: 5 Stars
Legend has it that conductor Fritz Reiner had a very foul temperament. I'm sure there must be some truth to this, because what we have here is one of the best performances of "Scheherazade" I've ever heard. Like all great conductors, Reiner was had magnificent control over his orchestra. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra plays with a lot of passion and anyone with ears can hear this in this performance.
This is a beautiful performance and should be essential listening to anyone interested in classical music. There is also a great version of Stravinsky's "Song of the Nightingale" that is noteworthy.
I would wager that Reiner's "Scheherazade" is one of the finest I've heard so far. Highly recommended.
Free Music Review: Definitive SACD of Scheherazade - Outstanding!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This multichannel SACD is recorded in the front 3 channels only, as this is what the technicians and their top notch analog equipment recorded more than 40 years ago. At that time the Chicago Symphony and conductor Fritz Reiner were both at the top of their game, and this recording has not been equalled to this day. Absolutely puts the listener in the middle of the ninth or tenth row, and provides the clean dynamic sound of the best recordings made today! This is the wonderful Scheherazade I grew up with, but much better because of SACD technology and my current audio system.
Free Music Review: Russian rousers! Hit: 5 Stars
"The Song of the Nightingale" is not my favorite Stravinsky...it just doesn't work that well as a piece of music, especially when compared to the opera original (which is an oddity itself). But Reiner makes it work somehow: the pacing is terrific and the playing as usual is razor-sharp. "Scheherazade" may be pretty tired by now but when you hear this performance it comes to life again and you realize why it has been such a popular score. Sure there are other ways to play it but this one is sensational...and the last movement was done in a single take!
Free Music Review: Buy TWO, one as a backup copy. Hit: 5 Stars
I own different copies of this production, including the JVC XRCD. I debated about getting another copy, but trust me, get TWO. The SACD version will give you a level of enjoyment that you have never experienced before. If you don't need a backup copy, buy two anyway and resell it on eBay in a few years.
