An absolutely tremendous album and it was the greatest post break up Beatle collaboration ever. Ringo hits full stride and his vocals fit every song written by not only himself but John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney as well as Randy Newman, t classic by the Shermans and a great pairing of Starr (Starkey) and Poncia. The album starts off with the song Lennon called the Muhammad Ali song, "I Am the Greatest". As Lennon said, only Ringo could sing it without anyone thinking he was an egomaniac. The song starts off slow with a dawdling beat but picks up-tempo as Lennon sings backing vocals in a semi-biographical song that refers to Liverpool, the greatest show on earth and references to Sgt. Pepper "Yes my name is Billy Shears and it has been for so many years". The next song written by Randy Newman is a very humorous rock bluesy song that is great for Ringo's voice as he sings "Have you seen my baby, Riding down the avenue, I see her riding with the milkman riding down the street, I say Mr. Milkman, when you are done with my baby, send her home to me" This song is followed by the heart warming song "Photograph" that is absolutely beautiful with great music about a man losing his love written by Starr and Harrison. Starting with abrupt piano introduction the songs just bursts in with "Every time I see your face, it reminds me of the place we used to go". This is Ringo's best song on the album and it was even more poignant when Ringo sang it on the Concert for George. George provided backing vocals for the original on this album. The next song written by Harrison, "Sunshine Life for Me" has an interesting up and down sound with a twang with Harrison and Robbie Roberson playing guitar. Most of the songs feature outstanding players such as Klaus Voorman on bass who goes back to the early Beatle years, Billy Preston (Let it Be) on piano and organ, Tom Scott's horns, Nicky Hopkins on piano, Marc Bolin and many other great artists. The cover of "Your Sixteen" is better than the original with Harry Nilsson doing the backing vocals. McCartney even plays the mouth sax on sixteen. The song was a major hit. "Oh My My" is another comic sounding rocker that is pure fun as a truly boogie tune as Ringo sings "Then my doctor said to me, can you boogie can you slide, Oh my my, Oh my, my, you can do it if you try". The song has great backs up with Martha Reeves, Merry Clayton and Friends. The songs lighten up with a purposely-slow "Step Lightly" by Ringo that is an appropriate lead in to McCartney's "Six O'clock", which is somewhat sweet song that is relatively mellow compared to the rest. The next song, "Devil Woman" is a foot stomping thumping of drums that work beautifully as Ringo sings and drums with Jim Kelter at a quick pace in sung as obvious frustration over an alien looking woman with a very hot body that is driving him crazy. "Devil Woman" was written by Starr (Starkey) and Poncia and it is another surprise quality song of its own. "You and Me (Babe)" by Harrison and Evans is a farewell tune that appropriately closes the original album as Ringo thanks all his friends as the beat goes on. Totally fitting for the ending. Included with the CD is Ringo's ultra rock classic "It Don't Come Easy" with great back up singers, guitar and the drums are played lightly in the initial stage by playing on the symbols with a blazing guitar then bursting into drum play as the supporting vocals crash into the lyric "You know it don't come easy" as Ringo's stark voice is modestly launched into this great collusion of instruments and backing vocals. This is a great song for Ringo and I think his best rocker and he wrote it. Also included are two relatively obscure songs "Early 1970" and "Down and Out". Actually the original recordings do not need the three additions. The originals are tightly wound together and even though "It Don't come Easy" is a great rock classic, I prefer them alone on their own merit because they create their own element. This is Ringo at his peak before he dropped into less successful song collections and while he was in the greatest all-star band. Great cover picture of all the participants that remind you of the great Sgt. Pepper cover. Also included is a wonderful songbook featuring art by Klaus Voorman. Voorman has black and white sketches of Ringo in various situations that fit each song perfectly. The best is ones are for the songs "Have You Seen My Baby" where Ringo is looking out a window of his stark apartment spying his girlfriend in a state of half undress being caressed by the milkman and the other is of Ringo bouncing in air in his medical shirt to the tune of "Oh My My". If you have never heard this album, you will be in for a surprise and a good time.
