Free Music Review: The Rippingtons' Finest Work

I am respectfully disagreeing with my fellow Rippingtons fans, many of whom have posted here saying Russ Freeman's latest release "Modern Art" deserves a place in the middle of the Rippingtons pack. "Modern Art" is absolutely my favorite Rippingtons CD.
I've been a fan for approximately ten years. I have thirteen of their releases on my I-pod, so I bring some perspective. The guitar work on the fourth track, "Pastels On Canvas" is some of the finest I've ever heard, and I'll include all genres of music in that superlative. Smooth, graceful, emotional, perfectly timed - its got it all.
However, if I had to idenify the instrumental star of this collection, it is undoubtedly the saxophone. Notice how on "Pastels on Canvas" the guitar and the sax are in perfect harmony, passing back and forth and playing at the same time, etc. Its beautiful. Taken as a whole, I think the saxaphone on "Modern Art" is also about as good as you will find on one CD. "One Step Closer," is a track where the sax really shines, but there are half a dozen more that are also very, very fine.
The variety is very nice here as well. Each song brings its own flavor and personality. There is no question that "Modern Art" is now the CD I am using to introduce jazz fans to the Rippingtons in order to get them hooked.
So for his next release, I vote (actually, beg) Russ Freeman to give us more of the same. Stay with the flavor, emotion and virtuosity of "Modern Art." I could listen to music like this forever. Its gorgeous.
