Free Music Notes for Delta Lady: The AnthologyFree Music Review: Excellent Hit: 4 Stars
What a beautiful, beautiful woman - I have to dwell a bit on this non-musical subject simply because pictures of Coolidge in her prime, long hair & willowy frame, still fill me with yearning, decades after the fact.
Like it was not enough that nature gave her stunning looks,Coolidge also possessed velvety voice that was seductive beyond words itself - combination was lethal.
Double Cd retrospective of her work through decades is surprisingly strong and listenable: it just shows that when something is done with heart and conviction,it never dates. It also shows changes in her singing and changes in popular music in general: Coolidge started like full-throated,blue-eyed soul singer not unlike Bonnie Bramlett and sang backing vocals for everybody on the planet before recording her own solo albums, where heavy-weights returned favor and placed her in center of stunning,laid-back,mellow and seductive soft-rock music.
At this point lady abandoned belting and perfected whispery, soulful purr that was actually Dusty Springfield but improved - her first few albums are still sensational, after all these years.
Big time came with calculated combination of covers and killer ballads, but this period has been played on the radio to death and though it was commercial peak for Collidge at the time,it pales next to beginning and end of this collection - ends are some high-quality songs where Coolidge gave up pursuing charts and simply kept artistic integrity with voice miraculously intact.
A dignified pop survivor.
Free Music Review: A Great Collection, oh so close to perfection....except Hit: 4 Stars
It was fantastic to finally get her first, regional hit, "Turn Around and Love You," on CD. While I bought the original Pepper Records single in the 60's, I hadn't heard it in years. It's still as strong a recording as ever and a wonderful addition here.Unfortunately, whoever did the track selections (and I've read elsewhere that Rita contributed), too many of my personal favorites were left off from her early albums, most of which are not currently available: "Second Story Window," "Most Likely You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine," "My Crew", "Heaven's Dream," "Desperados Waiting for the Train." That's why I couldn't give this otherwise great collection five stars. I definitely bought it, though, and certainly recommend this to anyone who might be considering it. It's a genuine bargain. Enjoy!
Free Music Review: Great voice, noisy arrangements Hit: 4 Stars
Rita Coolidge has a great voice, but this anthology demonstrates on a number of the songs how not to show it off to its best advantage. The poster child for a bad arrangement is "We're All Alone". Yeah, we're all alone except for a full freakin' orchestra and road crew! A lovely, intimate song that is overpowered by the instrumentation, plus her voice tracks are layered so that she sounds distant and impersonal. This is a song that cries out for a simple, spare arrangement with the vocals up close and personal. A great singer like Rita Coolidge doesn't need her vocals all tarted up, and a good song stands on its own.
Fortunately, most of the songs are not treated so shabbily- this set is a great treat.
Free Music Review: only you Hit: 4 Stars
"The way you do the things you do" and "only you" are the
two best songs here, in my opinion. Actually, I love the
song "only you" and this is why I purchased these cd's.
Nice and clear with solid sound.
Free Music Review: Clean, cool, lovely Hit: 4 Stars
Rita has such an incredible voice, it's amazing I never really gave her a second thought until I was thirty-something. So many songs to sing along to, to dream to, so dance to.
