Free Music Notes for Delta Lady: The Anthology

Free Music Review: Good collection
Hit: 4 Stars

Best collection of her earlier work that I have found. still missing some of my favorites.

Free Music Review: Definitely a mixed bag, but with some genuine highlights....
Hit: 2 Stars

Rita Coolidge's voice is always a pleasure to listen to, and never loses its easygoing appeal. However, like any singer, her instrument is undermined by weak material. When the songs are good, she's close to fabulous, and when not, well...
Case in point is Disc 1 in this anthology. If you can suffer through the first ten songs, which are mostly forgettable dross, you'll discover a generally enjoyable and more even selection of songs thereafter. I have always found "Born Under A Bad Sign" to be more irritating that entertaining, and what the heck are you supposed to do with a song like "Mud Island"?
But patience renders its own reward. Her version of Leonard Cohen's "Bird On The Wire" is stunning, and her cover of "Love Has No Pride" is credible. But the real standout on Disc 1 is "Born to Love Me," which is exactly the kind of mid-tempo, smartly-written love song she excels at.
Disc 2 features all of the hits you expect, and it's nice to hear the Boz Scaggs tune "Slow Dancer" after all these years - great melody, great lyrics, great harmony on this one. There are a few throw-away late 70's numbers here, too, like the Glen Campbell duet "Somethin' 'Bout You Baby I Like." Definitely for die-hard fans only. And though most of the material after "All Time High" is similarly forgettable, it's hard to deny a gem like the tender "Fool That I Am" which showcases her talents to their beautiful but subtle best.

Free Music Review: Great moments of music
Hit: 2 Stars

It's been a while since I had this beautiful experience just listening music, coming along with marvelous Rita. I've been wondering why never before were reissued her incredibles "Anytime...anywhere", "Love me again" or "Heartbreak radio" on digital format. So finally, with this anthology I have at least in part, the opportunity to enjoy her art.

Free Music Review: Disappointing
Hit: 2 Stars

I think all the songs - or at least most - are wonderful, however, I think that the depth and nuance of Rita Coolidge's voice have been lost in this remastering. I think it is particularly noticeable in the selections with Kris Kristofferson, whose distinctive sound has been totally mellowed in this album. Not what I'm looking forward in both these wonderful artists.

Free Music Review: Disappointing performance
Hit: 1 Stars

Okay, I am biased. I have all the Kristofferson/Coolidge compilations and love them to bits. Because I also have most of Kris's solo CDs, I thought I'd go full circle and check out Rita's solo recordings. Sadly, I was disappointed by Rita's solo stuff as it lacks enthusiasm, it lacks spirit, it lacks . . everything. She and Kris should have stuck it out and kept recording together as they are both significantly better when together.
